Late Nite Lounge Vol. 17 - BoomBox

Zion Godchaux (guitar and vocals) and Russ Randolph (sequencers, groove boxes, turntables) make up BoomBox, one of the best American music teams I have listened to in recent memory. Right now, in my psyche, they’re right up there with Thievery Corporation. They come from and are inspired by Muscle Shoals, Alabama. A state from which I thought music like this would never be produced, until I read up on the intriguing history behind the town of Muscle Shoals. It’s fascinatingng how much the town has contributed to American music of the 60’s through 80’s, and how the spirit of conviviality in music prevented social ills like segregation from ever gaining as strong a foothold there as in the rest of Alabama and the entire American South.

I was introduced to BoomBox by a special friend of mine, who unceremoniously removed my iPod from her dock while it was on one of my favorite songs and put this on. I think the album, Visions of Backbeat, played through at least 3 times before we decided to hear something else. It plays seamlessly, this album, to the point that at first, you don’t realize at which point a song ends and another one begins. Posted here is my favorite three-song segment of this 8-track album. It begins with the song Tonight, travels through India, and finishes with an epic Midnight on the Run. You’d think that the somewhat quick beats wouldn’t make for Late Nite listening, but you’d be surprised. The first time I listed to it was at night, and I didn’t want anything else. It has a certain jazz element to it, mixed with rock, house, psychedelic, and an addicting groove. Try playing it when your friend is playing a favorite song of theirs – major points if you get thanked rather than attacked.

Neste momento, se fossem os meus ouvidos a escreverem estas letras, diriam-vos que estimo os BoomBox tanto quanto os Thievery Corporation. Mas deve ser só um sentimento passageiro, julgo eu. Os BoomBox são de Muscle Shoals, Alabama, um estado que nunca pensei fosse a nascer filhos que produzissem música como esta. Mas após ler sobre a história fascinante de Muscle Shoals, joguei a minha ignorância pra fora. É muito interessante o grau da contribuição desta pequena cidade à música americana dos anos 60s-80s. Também é captivante saber que em Muscle Shoals, músicos negros e brancos trabalhavam lado a lado mesmo quando o resto da sua região ainda estava afundada no abismo que é o racismo institucionalizado.

Fui introduzido aos BoomBox por uma amiga minha, daquelas amizades especiais, em que ela pode se dar ao luxo de tirar o meu iPod da aparelhagem justo quando tocava uma das minhas músicas preferidas, para pôr esta banda a tocar. Acho que o album deles, Visions of Backbeat, tocou três vezes antes que decidimos ouvir outra coisa. Toca como escorre a água, de príncipio ao fim, ao ponto de se não prestares atenção, nem vais reparar quando é que uma música acaba e a outra começa. Postadas aqui estão as minhas três musicas preferidas do album, das 8 totais, em sequência. Começa com Tonight, passa pela India, e acaba em Midnight on the Run. Talvez pensem que a combinação de rock, house, e psychedelic não fosse a combinação ideal para uma Late Nite, mas o groove desta banda vai te fazer mudar de opinião. E por acaso, a primeira vez que os ouvi também foi de noite. Tenta só…ou melhor, espera que o teu amigo/a esteje a tocar o seu iPod, saca o mambo, e põe isto a tocar. Pontoas adicionais se em vez de ele/a se zangar, te diga obrigado…
