Editor's Pick: The Top 11 Songs of the Last Six Months (Vol. 4)

It comes a bit late, as it was due out in March. But as the months go by and the sheer talent of the artists posted here just seems to keep increasing, this list gets harder and harder to elaborate. As always, the "Editor's Pick" list highlights the best songs that have been posted on the Lounge over the past half-year, and only bonafide Lusophone songs are profiled on these lists; I don't include all the not-sung in Portuguese beauties that fill up the Late Nite Lounge Series and the Caipirinha Lounge Jazz sessions. The Top 11 list serves to highlight the best Lusophone music that the Lounge has posted over the last six-months; of course, that doesn't mean that the songs on this list were released in the last six months, but rather that they were posted here during that period of time.

It was quite the eventful six months. During this time I stumbled upon artists whose music I grew to love (and play on repeat) and whose lyrics have had a profound impact on me. I'm talking about musicians like António Zambujo, who has two songs in this list; Tulipa Ruiz, whose Do Amor I think is just stunning; BiD, whose Bambas & Biritas album was phenomenal; Bob da Rage Sense's A Carta, even though he chose to not sing it in a concert when it mattered most; and the always appropriate The Grasspoppers with their Folhas de Feijão Makonde, my sole companion during many a solitary walk around the city. It's interesting that this list is populated by Angolan hip-hop anthems, partly because of my listening them quite a bit over the past month due to the recent political developments there. Especially Mona Dya Kidi's T.P.A. Politics aside, here's to another great six months of beautiful music in Portuguese. I'll drink a caipirinha to that.
