Late Nite Lounge Vol. 42: Seasons, by Plej

I've previously rambled about Plej on this site, writing about the exciting music they're making in Sweden right now; but time and time again, I find myself going back to their stellar debut album, Electronic Music from the Swedish Left Coast. Work has been brutal lately, and this is the perfect antidote. I play it from start to finish on the way across the river to Brooklyn, and by the time I get home to hook it up to my speakers the album is still going strong. My elixir of choice lately has been the song Seasons - the ultimate sundowner, perfect for these summer nights, whether you're surrendering to your bed or letting the night take you somewhere else. It doesn't get much better than this for soft house/electronica.

Já divaguei sobre os Plej previamente neste espaço, onde escrevi sobre a contagiante música que se faz na Suécia estes dias. Mas cá estou novamente a falar-vos sobre este duo sueco e o seu álbum Electronic Music from the Swedish Left Coast, álbum este que saboreio vez após vez. Os dias no salo (trabalho, para vocês que não falam calão angolano) têm sido longos e brutais, mas este é o antídoto perfeito para desanuviar a mente. Toco-o do princípio ao fim no caminho do salo para casa, atravessando o rio entre Manhattan e Brooklyn, e quando chego a casa para conectar o iPod aos speakers, ainda resta muito álbum por tocar. Nestas últimas semanas o meu elixir sueco tem sido o som Seasons - uma música perfeita para o fim do dia e para estas noites de verão, adequada para aqueles dias em que a rendição à cama é inegociável mas também para as noites em que uma saída é indispensável. Em termos de soft house e electronica, músicas como esta estão no topo das minhas preferências.

House Music Made in Angola Vol. 4 - A Colecção do Djeff & Silyvi

Like I said some weeks back, Friday isn't Friday without a healthy dose of Afro-house. House music made in Angola has traveled leaps and bounds in both quality and innovation since I first started talking about it in this blog a couple of years ago, and the main proponents of its increase in quality no doubt are DJ Djeff & DJ Silyvi. So much so that they have a weekly gig at Elinga, the capital of house music in Luanda and a venue that frequently attracts international house DJs to the city. The duo has recently released a collection of their favorite hits, where it is patently clear just how far Angolan house music has come and how far it is poised to go. Among my favorites in this collection is Mwini, featuring the eternal  Mamukueno (how sick is that? Mamukueno!), as well as the tracks Nawe featuring Mili and O Semba done in collaboration with Felipe Narciso of AM Roots. As the duo become more well known in underground house music circles around the world, it'll be exciting to chart their music progress. Happy Friday and happy listening!

Como disse a semanas, sexta-feira não é sexta-feira sem uma dose saudável de afro-house. A house music feita em Angola e por angolanos percorreu um longo caminho desde os primeiros tempos que a postei aqui neste espaço, tanto em qualidade como em inovação. Uma das grandes razões desta subida de qualidade é a crescente afirmação do DJ Djeff e o DJ Silyvi. São dos maiores ‘motores’ da afro-house em Angola e para comprovar isso têm um gig semanal no Elinga, a capital da house music em Angola e uma casa que tem conseguido atrair diversos nomes mundialmente conhecidos da house music além-fronteiras. Recentemente este duo lançou um disco com algumas das suas melhores músicas, onde é possível ouvir a bom som o quanto tem evoluído a house music made in Angola. Entre as músicas de realce na Colecção constam Mwini, feita com a participação do mais velho Mamukueno (o mestre! O imortal!), como também Nawe com a Mili e O Semba feito com Felipe Narciso dos AM Roots. Aos poucos o duo vai se afirmando em circulos underground da house music mundial, e será interessante ver (e ouvir) o seu progresso. Feliz sexta-feira para si e os seus ouvidos!

Late Nite Lounge Vol. 36 - Plej

Electronic Music from the Swedish Leftcoast, by the brothers Arvid and Erik Niklasson who together make up Plej, was released in 2003 and, by the series of random and unpredictable events that define our existence, came to my attention when my friend Elton casually dropped their name in some mundane Facebook chat we were having, 8 years later. My first thought, as it often is when I hear the first notes of a song that particularly resonates with me, was "where has this been all my life?" The first half of Plej's debut album is stronger than its second, with the notable exception of their song You (eighth song on the album out of 12) but when you start off an album with such songs as Lay of the Land, Blue, and Evum back to back, it's hard to maintain that level of excellence throughout an entire LP. Including here for your listening pleasure is some of the finest Swedish soft house/electronica around, two months after we heard another Swedish act from Gothenburg here on the Lounge, in the form of Little Dragon. Blue and Evum are the selected cuts...I couldn't get past them for awhile as I first listened to this album. They're the ultimate late night joints.

Electronic Music From the Swedish Leftcoast, dos irmãos Arvid and Erik Niklasson que juntos formam a banda Plej, foi lançado em 2003 e, na eterna série de eventos aleatórios e imprevisíveis que definem a nossa existência, finalmente chegou aos meus ouvidos quando o meu kamba Elton falou-me deles numa conversa qualquer no Facebook a semana passada, 8 anos depois do álbum ser lançado. O meu primeiro pensamento, como muitas vezes acontece quando oiço música que me toca de alguma maneira, seja por causa de motivos que têm ou não haver com a música em questão, foi simplesmente a pergunta, "como é que ainda não te ouvi este tempo todo?" A primeira metade deste álbum é mais forte que a segunda, com a excepção da música You (a oitava de 12 músicas) o que não é de estranhar...quem começa álbuns com músicas como Lay of the Land, Blue, e Evum tem uma árdua tarefa pela frente. Como o Lounge quer que tenha ouvidos saudáveis e se preocupa com o que lá entra, estão aqui expostas para a sua sáude espiritual e auricular o que considero serem as duas melhores músicas do disco, mostrando-lhe entre as melhores músicas de soft-house e electronica da Suécia, 1 mero mês depois ter partilhado Little Dragon com vocês, banda esta que tal como Plej também é de Goteburgo. Depois de ter ouvido Blue e Evum foi difícil carregar no botão de avançar e ouvir o resto do álbum...estas músicas são perfeitas para a late nite.
