I’m absolutely partial to house music made like this. Soulful and deep. Since I’ve known that DJ Black Coffee would grace this year’s edition of the Luanda International Jazz Festival, I’ve been on a Black Coffee binge. Which comes at an opportune time, because I hear the man is currently on a North American tour and will soon be playing here in New York City in a show I’ll be sure not to miss (and you should come too if you like what you hear). Being South Africa one of the African countries where house music has truly taken hold, it’s not surprising that one of its best DJs would produce and create music of this hypnotic quality. Superman is a jam that goes far beyond what most people (erroneously) consider as “good” house music, especially when compared to what passes for house music in the mainstream. A lot of credit on this track goes to Bucie, who is a house music starlet in her own right down in South Africa. Her vocals make this track and take it to another level. I also adore the way the piano was used here, interplaying with the main beat as if it mistook this song for a jazz number. Lucky are those that will be able to see this DJ perform live in a quintessentially balmy Luanda evening during the Jazz Festival. Plus, It’s nice to be finally be able to put a face on all that beautiful house music I heard while down in Cape Town.

Sou completamente louco por house music deste estilo. Soulful e deep. Desde que soube que o DJ Black Coffee faria parte desta edição do Luanda International Jazz Festival, não quero ouvir outra coisa. Maldita hora que fui descobrir este DJ. Felizmente, o mesmo virá em breve para Nova Iorque e farei tudo por tudo para não perder o seu show. Sendo a África do Sul um dos países africanos onde a house music realmente se faz sentir, não é de estranhar que um dos melhores DJs daquele país fosse produzir música desta qualidade. Superman é um brinde que vai muito mais além do ‘bum bum bum’ que muitas pessoas associam à este género musical, chegando mesmo a nos tocar em sensibilidades mais profundas. Muito mérito tem que ser dado à cantora Bucie, uma verdadeira estrela da house music sul-africana. A sua voz nesta track é simplesmente fenomenal. Adoro também o uso quase que perfeito do piano e a forma que o mesmo brinca com o ritmo contagiante da música, como se de um jazz se tratasse. Durante a noite morna em que decorrerá o Jazz Festival, são sortudos os que poderão ouvir Superman ao vivo, tocado pela mão capaze do DJ Black Coffee.

House music in South Africa is alive and well. It's attracting an ever larger following within the country, throughout the continent, and beyond. In Angola, its becoming quite sough after, and if Kentphonik's appearance in Elinga last year is anything to go by, it has a solid fan base. Perhaps what makes South African house music one of the best produced on this continent is its undeniable quality, its sophistication, and the its unique rhythm. Black Coffee (Nathi Maphumulo) and Liquideep (Ziyon and Ryzor) are two of the highest proponents of South African house music, and both will be present in this year's Luanda Jazz Festival, most likely to play in between sets during the jazz performances at Cine Atlântico. I wouldn't be surprised to see them playing in Elinga later those nights either. If, like me, your South African house music knowledge is limited to Kentphonic, this is a good place to start.

Among their most well known track's are Black Coffee's Turn Me On, featuring South African beauty and house music sensation Bucie, and Liquideep's Fairtytale, one of the most popular house jams from that country in recent years. It's up to you to decide your favorite (Black Coffee is mine)...if you live in Luanda, you'll get to be blessed with both.

A música house sul-africana está de boa saúde. Atrai cada vez mais fãs não só na South como também à volta do continente e o mundo. Em Angola, é cada vez mais procurada e faz-se ouvir em diversas casas nocturnas da cidade. Basta nos lembarmos da actuação dos Kentphonik no Elinga para perceber o grau de apreciação que eles comandam. Creio que o que faz a house music sul-africana ser tão apreciada é o seu elevado padrão de produção, a sua originalidade, e a sua sofisticação. Black Coffee (Nathi Maphumulo) e Liquideep (Ziyon and Ryzor) são dois dos melhores practicantes de house music em África do Sul, e os dois participarão no Luanda Jazz Festival, provávelmente a animarem a plateia entre os sets dos artistas de jazz no Cine Atlântico. E claro, não estranharia se os mesmos fossem depois convidados ao Elinga. Se, como eu, a sua sabedoria da house music sul-africana se resume nos Kentphonik, este é um bom lugar para começar.

Entre as canções mais conhecidas destes artistas estão Turn Me On, do Black Coffee e com a participação da Bucie, outra grande revelação da house music sul-africana, e Fairytale dos Liquideep, talvez o maior sucesso do grupo. Cabe a si decidir qual das duas prefere (cá por mim, tiro o chapéu ao Black Coffee). Se vive em Luanda, então tem ainda outra razão para assistir ao Jazz Festival.

This is another one of those songs that isn't Lusophone but that I cannot resist sharing with you. It's a sublime jam from South Africa, a country whose house music scene is vibrant and exploding, there's no other way to describe it. Sunday Showers is at least two years old but it continues to play vigorously in Luanda's nightclub circuit; I did not go out a single night without hearing this song being played at some venue around the city's better clubs. Kentphonik, the duo behind this massive heat, have been to Luanda themselves, playing in front of a sizeable crowd at Elinga Teatro. Sunday Showers is one of their biggest hits not just in South Africa or Angola but beyond the African continent, a hit that says African house music has arrived on the worldwide stage.

Esta é mais uma daquelas músicas que mesmo não sendo lusófona, me é impossível não partilhá-la com vocês. É um brinde sublime vindo da África do Sul, país aonde o house music está em franca expansão. Já são vários os DJ internacionais que vão para a 'South' para ouvirem com os seus próprios ouvidos a qualidade de house music que se ouve naquele país irmão. Sunday Showers já tem pelo menos dois anos de existência mas continua a ser de audição obrigatória nas diversas casas nocturnas na cidade; não me lembro sair uma única vez sem me deliciar com esta música. Kentphonik, os autores deste sucesso, já estiveram em Luanda, e foi no Elinga Teatro, com casa abarrotada, que brindaram o público luandense com esta música ao vivo. Sunday Showers é o seu maior hit na 'South', em Angola e mesmo além do continente africano, é um hit que infroma ao mundo que a house music feita em África já chegou ao circuito mundial.
