Trails and Ways goes Brazilian

I get an incredible amount of music sent to me; the vast majority isn't even in Portuguese. The people that send them rarely bother to look at the type of music the Lounge plays. But once in a while a kind, musical soul will actually send something worthwhile. Something worth listening to. Something in Portuguese, or inspired by the Lusophone culture and way of living. That's exactly what happened with Keith and his band Trails and Ways. They hail from Oakland but they sing in English with a bit of Portuguese here and there, testament to the musical inspiration acquired while they spent some time living in Fortaleza, Brazil. Bossa nova dream folk, they like to call it. The two songs featured here, One Note, inspired by Samba de Uma Nota Só, and Bimbom, which dispenses introduction, are from two EPs of theirs, Temporal and Territorial, respectively. Serve chilled and enjoy.

Ao longo destes anos tenho recebido uma quantidade incrível de música das mais diversas fontes, e a vasta maioria nem sequer era em português. Pelos vistos as pessoas que as mandam não fazem a mínima ideia do tipo de música que o Lounge toca. Mas de vez em quando, recebo pérolas musicais de gente que respira arte. Pérolas em português, ou inspiradas pela cultura e o sentimento artístico lusófono. Foi exactamente o que aconteceu com o Keith e a sua banda, Trails and Ways. São da zone de São Francisco mas viveram alguns meses em Fortaleza, de onde beberam uma dose saudável da vivência brasileira. Quando voltaram para os States até já conseguiam arranhar um certo português, como se escuta nas suas músicas. A sua sonoridade eles chamam de bossa nova dream folk. As duas músicas destacadas aqui, One Note (inspirada por Samba de Uma Nota Só) e Bimbom, que dispensa introduções, podem ser encontradas nos seus EPs Temporal e Territorial, respectivamente. Late Nite Lounge Vol. 35: Green Grass of Tunnel, by Múm

This is one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard in my life. I don't know what it is about Icelandic music being so exquisitely unique, or how the same country can produce musicians as ethereal and otherworldly as Sigur Rós or as angelic and sublime as Múm, but something tells me it has something to do with the fantastical landscapes and heavenly perspectives that one sees so often in that country. It's true that this type of music isn't for everyone - it's not meant for mass appeal or instant accessibility. But for me, never before has music moved me at certain points in life as much as a Sigur Rós or Múm record. I first heard Green Grass of Tunnel about three years ago, and it was a defining moment in my life musically speaking. Three years later and I still can't go two weeks without hearing it, and when I do, invariably it feels just as surreal and magical as the first time. Múm's music is officially characterized as experimental and folktronic, and this 8-person collective has been making music since 1997. If, after you press play, you become entranced by their musical ability, I suggest you peruse your catalog and, in their words, 'sing along to songs you don't know.'

Green Grass of Tunnel

Esta é uma das mais belas músicas que eu alguma vez tive o prazer e o privilégio de ouvir na minha vida. Não sei porquê que música islandesa consegue ser tão esquisitamente única, nem como é possível o mesmo país produzir músicos tão etéreos e transcendentais como os Sigur Rós ou tão angélicos e sublimes como os Múm, mas algo diz-me que tem haver com as paisagens paradísiacas e fantásticas daquela ilha frígida lá quase no topo do mundo. É verdade que a música que estes grupos fazem não é para todos, principalmente as músicas dos Sigur Rós. Mas para mim, nunca antes a música tinha me movido assim tanto em determinados pontos da minha vida, nunca antes de conhecer os Sigur Rós e Múm. Green Grass of Tunnel foi uma música que me tocou no fundo. A primeira vez que a ouvi foi ha três anos, e musicalmente falando foi um momento determinante na minha vida. Três anos depois ainda a oiço quase que semanalmente, e quando a oiço é tão mágica e surreal como a primeira vez. A música dos Múm é descrita como sendo post-rock, experimental e 'folktronica', e este grupo de 8 músicas já vem fazendo música desde 1997. Se, depois de carregares no play, te apaixonares pelo seu som, sugerio que faças uma viagem pelo seu universo, e, como eles dizem, 'sing along to songs you don't know.'
