Los Cafres

I had barely put my luggage down after I arrived in Buenos Aires when my good friend and flat mate Chris put the Vivo a lo Cafre CD in my hands. “You gotta listen to this shit, man.” I didn’t really sit down and listen to them until a couple of days later, as reggae in Spanish had never really before caught my attention. But when I gave this album a listen, it changed my perspective. I have been hooked on Los Cafres, Argentina’s premiere roots reggae band, ever since. I blast it on my headphones on the commute to work…I’m that fool bobbing his head in the back seat of the bus, oblivious to his surroundings, thoroughly engrossed in the rhythm. And this CD, and thus the songs featured here, are live, so you can imagine the energy pulsating through the songs. Los Cafres are very popular among the younger crowd here and their fan base is extensive. Want to make friends in Buenos Aires? Mention that you jam to Los Cafres. Works every time. This beloved Porteño band dates from the 80s and has gone through a couple of reincarnations, but Guillermo Bonetto, the man on the photo, has been with them from the start. Mal tinha largado as minhas imbambas (malas) após a minha chegada a Buenos Aires, quando o meu grande amigo e companheiro de apartamento, Chris, deu-me o CD Vivo a lo Cafre. “Tens que ouvir essa cena, muadie.” (Claro que não disse muadie, já que ele não conhece calão angolano, mas é só para terem uma idéia). Eu nem liguei muito, já que reggae em espanhol nunca tinha realmente me capturado o interesse. Mas dias depois, quando finalmente sentei para ouvir devidamente o álbum, mudou a minha perspectiva. Desde la, ouço Los Cafres quase todos os dias. São a banda de roots reggae mais popular em Argentina, e no caminho ao trabalho, e ao regresso, normalmente os ponho no iPod. Sou eu aquele gajo no autocarro que esta a abanar a cabeça, completamente em trance com este reggae roots, vendo a cidade que os inspirou a passar pela janela do autocarro. E os sons do cd, tais como os que estão perfilados aqui, são ao vivo, e pode sentir-se a energia crua do concerto deles. A juventude aqui os adora...se te apetecer fazer amigos em Buenos Aires, basta dizeres que costumas ouvir Los Cafres. Esta banda porteña existe desde os anos 80 e já sofreu varias alterações, mas o homem na foto, Guillermo Bonetto, esta com eles desde o principio.
