Nó Na Orelha, by Criolo

Officially, Criolo is a rapper. Unofficially he is a bit of everything else. An ex-teacher who still lives in his favella (Grajaú), his album is a buffet of different sounds and flavors, including samba, MPB, soul, reggae, and more. As soon as I heard the first notes of his album opener, Bogotá, I knew I was in for something special, something different. I approached the album blindly - it wasn't until later in my listening experience that I realized I was listening to a proper rapper, who's been active in São Paulo's hip-hop scene for more than a decade. How could I have known? Bogotá is an infectious afro-beat reminiscent of Cacique '97 and maybe even a bit of Kuti in which Criolo, born Kleber Gomes, sings like a soulful crooner.

Nó na Orelha is Criolo's second album, and what an eclectic album it is. Take, for instance, Subirusdoistiozin, a laid back, chilled track that at first listen might seem out of place in a rapper's album. But that's the thing...unless you approach the album with an open mind and get rid of any preconceived notions, you'll be hard-pressed to get past the fact that this Paulista rapper can sing, and sing well. His music has soul, strength, and sophistication: it is a poignant, personal perspective on the new São Paulo and, more broadly, the new Brazil, with all its inequalities and contradictions. But it also has attitude. Sucrilhos is perhaps the track where he best stakes his claim as a skillful lyricist and showcases his verve and charisma. If I had found out about this man sooner I would of seen him live at Nublu; for now, all I can do is content myself with hearing him at my house. Which is precisely what I've been doing recently - drinking in the lyrics and getting to know Brazil through the incredible music of one of its sons.

I'll leave you with Não Existe Amor em SP (Love doesn't exist in São Paulo).

P.S. Get his album for free straight from his website. You have to.

E é ecletismo do bom, do puro.
