Anané Vega

Mention Capeverdean music to someone (a cultured friend, perhaps) and they'll most likely conjure up images of mornas and musicians such as Cesária Évora and Tito Paris, or maybe Bana. The more current and refined among them might know of a Mayra Andrade coladera or two, or perhaps a Sara Tavares 'world music' hit . None of them, however, is likely to mention house music, much less house music made by a Capeverdean artist. But that is exactly what Anané Vega does, and to aplomb. She's the wife of legendary house music DJ and producer Louie Vega, and if anything is to be said of Mr. Vega, is that he has taste.

Anané Vega, singer, songwriter, producer and DJ from Praia, has been taking the world by storm slowly but surely with her unique, infectious, pulsating brand or deep house. Besides being a musician she is also a philanthropist and an entrepreneur, having co-founded the label behind AM Roots, Nulu Records. But what brought Anané to my attention was her blockbuster hit, Let's Get High (Life, Love, Music), the anthem of my recent times in Luanda. It's impossible for me not to think of my cousins and brothers when this song comes on, such is its nostalgic effect on me. When I think of many of my greatest memories from this past summer in Luanda, invariably the lyrics of this song pop up in my psyche. What a jam.

Included here for your listening pleasure are two versions of this song. The first is the Louie Vega Radio Edit, the version most heard in Luanda's night scene, while the second is Yves Larock's take on the song.

A segunda é o remix do Yves Larock. Que desfrutem...
