Mayra Andrade

Mayra AndradeI don’t know what draws me to her more, her slightly raspy, beautiful voice or her stunning looks. Maybe it’s the exotic combination of the two. Mayra has the kind of voice that is perfect for starting out your day in the morning, or ending it on a quiet, sensual note at night. I was first introduced to her work by my brother on one of my trips to Angola a couple of years ago. The song he showed me was Mana, an acoustic melody that got me immediately hooked. I yearned for more and bought her whole debut album, Navega, upon returning to the States.

It was my best musical purchase of the year.

Mayra Andrade is further testament to the musical soul of Cape Verde, home of Sara Tavares, Cesária Évora, and countless others. Mayra is a bit of a globetrotter, having been born in Cuba and grown up in Senegal, Germany, Angola, and now lives in Paris, France. She started singing at a very young age and won her first international competition at the age of 16, a habit she has preserved ‘til the present day, as she also won the BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music 2008. She sings in a variety of styles, including morna, funana, and batuque, and croons in a variety of languages, including Portuguese, creole, and French. Her album is sparsely produced, making it sound simple and intimate, with a lot of acoustic guitars, drums, and various Cape Verdean instruments. It is one of those albums in which every song is a gem in its own right, but my two favorite songs, the ones I most want to share with you, are Lapidu na Bo and Tunuka. They both highlight her intoxicating qualities as the new voice of Cabo Verde.

Lapidu Na Bo
Tunuka

Hoje, é portadora do BBC Radio 3 Awards for World Music 2008.

Thanks for all the music and pictures. You feature artists who flew under my radar (Ive Mendes!) as well as a surprising number of tunes I already have. We appear to have pretty similar tastes, so I will happy to watch this space. (I found your blog through a referral from Guuzbourg at Filles Sourires.) Keep up the good work, Claudio & best wishes from Holland.
