Buraka Som Sistema

Buraka Som SistemaThis isn't really news...Buraka Som Sistema have been rocking out Europe for the better part of two years. But it has been two days since they came to the US and rocked out Coachella (Pics here) in LA, California. As an Angolan, I am extremely proud to see kuduro taking the world by storm. Most Angolans always felt like kuduro would eventually get big; we dreamt of it being played in clubs from Osaka to Stockholm. Seeing the reality of Buraka propagating Luanda's most intense rhythm the world over is thus very special. Witnessing a dream become reality is always an intense feeling - Buraka have played in Osaka and Stockholm to enormous success.

Frequently described as a Portuguese group, its main creative force is our known Conductor, perhaps the best producer Angola has seen. Other members of the group include Rui Pité (DJ Riot), João Barbosa (Lil John) and Kalaf. While their sound is not strictly kuduro, as they have meshed it more Western rhythms such as house and techno, it is nonetheless a riotous, frenzied dance rhythm that could only have been inspired in the slums of Luanda. Here are two of the tracks that have been instrumental to their career and made bodies around the world pulsate with rhythm: Yah! and Sound of Kuduro, featuring MIA of Paper Planes fame. Yah! is from their first album, From Buraka to the World, and is featured here because it put them on the map. Sound of Kuduro is from their latest album, Black Diamond, and is here because a) it’s my favorite song of theirs; b) because it helped consolidate their position as one of the premier world dance music acts of recent times. Long live kuduro!

For a comparison with straight up kuduro without Buraka gloss, check out these tunes, and watch this video.

Yah!
Sound of Kuduro

Viva o kuduro!
