Mallu Magalhães is younger than me. Mallu Magalhães is younger than my brother Joel, who I consider an infant (hi Joel). But at 19, and at the risk of sounding sappy, she proves once again that talent knows no age. Pitanga, her THIRD studio album, was my introduction to her; I have yet to hear her first two efforts. If you are reading this in Brazil, you most likely already know all about Mallu; she's been quite the sensation there ever since she started displaying her precocious musical talent on Myspace at a time when kids her age were using it for very different purposes. Her eponymous debut was released around the time she was only 16.

But apparently I haven't been paying attention and Pitanga was thus my introduction to the bilingual Mallu, after I saw it listed somewhere as one of the top Brazilian albums of the year. I'm taken aback by the freshness with which she creates Brazilian music, incorporating in it elements of rock and folk. I've noticed this growing trend with Brazilian music, and she does it very well. However, my favorite songs on Pitanga remain the ones that sound the most...familiar. Sambinha Bom, for example, always has me pressing the back button once it's done. It's simple and pared down - a multi-instrumental but mellow samba, and her voice. At 2 minutes and 55 seconds, it's short and sweet. Por Que Você Faz Assim Comigo is a little more into folk territory and more of a wider window into the different type of music she's so good at; listen to it on your headphones and pay attention at its intricateness. And finally there's O, Ana, which, at 2:14, is one of the shortest songs on the album as well as one of the ones I've listened to the most...

A Mallu Magalhães é minha mais nova. A Mallu Magalhães é mais nova do meu puto Joel, que considero imberbe (fixe, Jujas?). Mas aos 19 anos, é mais uma prova, e perdoem-me o clichê, que o talento não tem idade. O seu TERCEIRO álbum, Pitanga, foi a minha introdução à sua música; falta-me ainda ouvir os primeiros dois. Se está a ler isto no Brazil, com certeza que já a conhece e este texto não é novidade nenhuma; a Mallu tem sido uma verdadeira sensação musical desde o tempo que decidiu mostrar ao mundo o seu talento precoce na sua página Myspace quando o resto do pessoal da sua idade ainda usava o Myspace para fins...distintos. Aos 16 anos, lançou o seu primeiro CD.

Mas pelos vistos eu estive distraído, e foi preciso ela lançar o terceiro álbum para eu tomar nota - encontrei a Pitanga numa lista dos melhores álbuns brasileiros do ano. Tem sido uma lufada de ar fresco ouvir a sua maneira peculiar de encarar a música brasileira, misturando-a com elementos de folk e rock. Tenho notado esta tendência na música brasileira actual, e a Mallu não foi a primeira e não será a última a usufruir desta nova sonoridade. Mas certamente que é gostoso ouvi-la, tanto em inglês como em português - ela canta nas duas línguas. Contudo, as minhas músicas preferidas do Pitanga continuam a ser as que empregam a musicalidade tradicional do Brasil. Sambinha Bom, por exemplo, é a minha preferida. Nada mais que um samba suave, ameno, e a sua voz. Tem 2 minutos e 55 segundos mas é linda, talvez mesmo por ser tão pequena. Por Que Você Faz Assim Comigo é talvez um pouco mais 'folk' e é um melhor exemplo da sua musicalidade no geral; escute-a nos seus headphones e aprecie a complexidade da composição. E por fim, temos O, Ana, que, com 2:14, é uma das mais curtas do álbum mas também umas das que mais oiço.
