Caipirinha Lounge Jazz Sessions: Tinho Pereira

When it comes to Brazilian jazz, Tinho Pereira is the truth. Chances are you've never heard of him - I hadn't until Carl Siegel of the record label Three Chord Truth sent me some music off Tinho's debut album Hand Made - and chances are you'll instantly appreciate the rich Brazilian sound that is pulsating through Tinho's music. Based in Shanghai for the past 5 years, Tinho Pereira is a regular at popular Shanghai jazz club JZ, where he creates magic with his 6-string bass every weekend to the aural joy of the clubs patrons; Hand Made, recorded in Brazil and featuring jazz musicians from all across the world, is his first studio album and highlights his classical training with both the bass and the guitar, both of which he can be seen clutching on the album cover.

Hand Made is quite the accessible jazz album and sounds like the work of a man who loves his craft. But among its highlights are two tracks in particular, one of which has been on repeat on my stereo. I'm talking about Brazilian Groove, which sounds exactly as what its title alludes to. A joyous and upbeat number, Brazilian Groove is the album opener and its saxophone riffs are only surpassed by the way Tinho masters his bass guitar and the amount of rhythm and soul that he extracts from it. The other highlight on the album is the aptly named Shanghai My City, which coincidentally is one of the songs that the singer himself is most proud of. Perhaps because it counts with the subtle participation of his then two-month old son...

Nunca mais ouvi jazz brasileiro feito com o mesmo entusiasmo com que o faz o Tinho Pereira. Talvez nem nunca ouviu falar dele - eu também não tinha a mais pálida ideia da sua existência até receber um email do Carl Siegel do label Three Chord Truth com algumas músicas do seu álbum de estreia Hand Made- mas tenho a certeza que apreciará instantâneamente a essência brasileira do seu jazz. O Tinho vive em Shaghai há pelo menos 5 anos e faz parte da banda que anima as sempre concorridas noites do clube de jazz JZ, deliciando os presentes com os seus dotes quase que mágicos com o seu baixo. Hand Made, gravado no Brasil e contando com a participação de 20 artistas provenientes de vários cantos do mundo, é o seu primeiro álbum à solo e destaca o nível de treino e conhecimento que o Tinho Pereira tem com o baixo e a guitarra, seus instrumentos de eleição.

Hand Made é um album accessível e parece ser obra de alguém que ama fazer música. Mas entre os seus melhores temas estão as duas músicas aqui postadas, uma das quais tenho em repeat. Falo de Brazilian Groove, a primeira música que se ouve quando se põe o CD a tocar. O título dela diz tudo, é uma música alegre e solta, em que o saxofone faz um duelo lindo com o baixo do Tinho Pereira numa espécie de concurso para ver qual dos dois instrumentos conjura mais paixão e ritmo. O outro destaque do álbum é Shanghai My City, que por acaso também é uma das músicas preferidas do próprio artista. Talvez porque conta com a participação súbtil do seu filho que na altura tinha dois meses...
