Stória, Stória by Mayra Andrade

After the tremendous critical and commercial success of her first album Navega, Mayra Andrade would always have an uphill battle in trying to top the level of inspiration and quality of that piece of work. But not one to shy away from a recording studio, she has released the follow-up album Stória, Stória in Europe, with a North American release planned for later this year. It’s a lush, delicious summer album that took me a few listens before the quality of the music truly sunk in. I still prefer Navega because of how much I enjoyed almost every single song in that album, but that is not to say that Stória doesn’t also have its gems. And I feel that after a few more listens I might “discover” a couple more songs to fall in love with.

It was difficult picking two songs to share with you here, and I clearly didn’t do a good job of it because included here are three songs and not just two. Stória, Stória, the title track, is the opener to the CD and is perfect for those mornings when bright sunlight and a lazy summer breeze are filtering through your window. It’s that kind of sound. Mon Carrousel is a beautiful track sung in French, following in the footsteps of Comme s’il en Pleuvait, the French track in Navega. And lastly there is the simple but enchanting Palavra where the piano is played to beautiful effect. Produced and recorded in São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Bahía, Havana, and Paris, and featuring acclaimed Brazilian producer Alê Siqueira, Stória is that type of album that you have to go buy. Right now. Depois do enorme sucesso de Navega, o seu primeiro album, sempre seria díficil para Mayra ser capaz de fazer um trabalho que superasse aquele. Mas batalhadora e sem medo que ela é, lançou-se num perípelo pelo mundo, passando por Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, Bahía, Havana, e Paris, falou com o productor brasileiro Alê Siqueira, e o resultado chama-se Stória, Stória. É um album rico e alegre, que faz lembrar aqueles dias de verão que todos amamos. Este album para mim não foi um caso de amor à primeira vista como foi Navega, e precisei de várias sessões com isto ao ouvido para começar realmente a apreciar muitas das cançoes.

Stória, Stória, a canção que abre o disco, foi das poucas que amei logo ao primeiro som da voz dela. É daquelas músicas que caêm bem logo pela manhã com um sol brilhante e uma briza amena a entrar pela janela. Outra música que me despertou foi Mon Carrousel, cantada totalmente em Frances, do mesmo estilo que Comme s’il en Pleuvait do seu primeiro album. É um exemplo da versatilidade dela. E por último, amo Palavra, uma música que no princípio não achei grande coisa mas depois reparei que a escutava sucessivamente. Para quem achou estas palavras suficientemente sedutoras, o album ja esta a venda. Mas para quem ainda precisa de ser convencido, uma escutadela a canção Trubulénsa no Myspace da Mayra será o suficiente. É um exemplo do que aconteceria se Cuba e Cabo Verde namorassem.
