É Verão, Part 2

Some weeks ago I wrote a post about É Verão, a song by Duo Ouro Negro that captured the essence of summer. It was lazy, carefree, and melodic, and the lyrics were the embodiment of a typical summer day at the beach. The Duo talked about stolen kisses and rolling waves, of brilliant sunshine and no worries. In that same vein, but in a slightly different delivery, I want to share with you three more songs that, in my view, capture the feelings and emotions associated with summer. Which, I might add, is in its last throes here in the northern hemisphere.

Nunca Mais, by Zuco 103

Zuco 103 was profiled in this blog in its early days with two downtempo songs, one a beautiful bossa nova named Jussara and the other a more complex, electronica jam called Tão Lonely. Nunca Mais showcases a more exuberant Zuco 103, and it’s a catchy, poppy tune that sounds great when the sun is shining and the car windows are rolled all the way down. It’s a carefree song whose title loosely translates to Never Again, and it’s made a bit more sophisticated by Lilian Vieira’s crystalline voice, the lively acoustic guitars, the subtle piano, and the playful bass rhythm.

Na Areia da Praia, by Paulo Flores

Paulo Flores brings things down a bit with Na Areia da Praia and shows us that other side of summer, the one of chasing flings and fleeting loves. His jazzy song evokes the omnipresent nostalgia of summer. Paulo sings about a mulatta from Benguela (where else) that he saw but once at the beach, never to see her again.

Praia Mole, by Wax Poetic

This instrumental from the globetrotters Wax Poetic is in the same sentimental vein as Paulo Flores’ Na Areia da Praia but with a soft electronic element added to it as well as a sort of flute and some percussion. It is a wistful song, a perfect low key jam for cruising those late summer nights. Praia Mole manages to be more energetic than Paulo Flores’ song but not as lively as Zuco’s - it strikes an appealing balance and has a very unique sound.

Algumas semanas atrás fiz um post sobre a música É Verão dos Duo Ouro Negro, música esta que captura muito bem a verdadeira essência do verão. É uma canção relaxada, um pouco preguiçosa, e muito melódica, em que a letra descreve um típico dia de verão à beira mar. O Duo canta sobre ventos sussuradores e beijos quentes, sobre ondas que vêm e vão, sobre o sol quente e brilhante e sobre uma vida sem preocupações. Nesta mesma onda, quero partilhar convosco mais três canções que capturam os sentimentos e as emoções da estação mais quente do ano, que, aqui no hemisfério norte, esta prestes a terminar.

O grupo brasileiro Zuco 103 foi destacado neste espaço quando o Caipirinha Lounge ainda estava na sua infância, lá no longiquo mês de abril, o segundo da sua existência. A canção Jussara, um bossa nova lindo e suave, e Tão Lonely, uma música que exemplifica muito bem o genero ‘brazilelectro’, foram as escolhidas para deliciarem os vossos tímpanos. O som Nunca Mais mostra um Zuco 103 mais exuberante e mais solto, e é aquele tipo de música que foi feita para ser tocada no carro a alto voluma com as janelas abertas e a estrada deserta. Mais uma vez Lilian Vieira da show com a sua voz cristalina, e a guitarra, o piano, e o baixo fazem desta música uma canção feliz.

Na Areia da Praia, por Paulo Flores

Na Areia da Praia é uma canção de Paulo Flores com elementos de jazz em que ele nos recorda que ha outro lado do verão, o lado melancólico e nostálgico. O verão tambêm é a época de amores perdidos e paixões intensas mas sem grande duração. “Me fala só dessa mulata, da areia da praia..” Mulata esta de Benguela, aonde mais. Fazem enlouquecer...

Praia Mole, por Wax Poetic

Esta instrumental dos viajantes Wax Poetic é da mesma atitude calma e sentimental com a canção de Paulo Flores, mas com fortes influências electrónicas e uma flauta que mistura muito bem com a percurssão. É uma canção relaxante, perfeita para aquelas voltas pela cidade em noites de verão. Praia Mole não é tão nostálgica como a música de Paulo Flores nem tão alegre como Nunca Mais, mas sim uma mistura dos dois.
