Ex-Combatentes, by Paulo Flores: Sembas

Paulo Flores Ex-Combatentes
A bit over a month ago, Paulo Flores was playing at the Lounge, filling the air (or your laptop headphones) with delicious music from his three-disc set Ex-Combatentes. It was a bit over a month ago that we heard sounds like Diarabi and the haunting Pé Na Lama. As April begins in earnest and the sun starts to make a somewhat more regular appearance on the Boston skyline, Paulo Flores returned to wow me with his lyricism. Click on Meu Amor Quando me Beija, my current addiction. It’s the song that I listen to when I wake up in the morning and the sun shines brightly into my room, it’s the song that I’m playing as I’m walking down the street – the perfect soundtrack for Spring. Light, airy, unassuming, fun.

Then comes Ser da Lata, which is a bit more reminiscent of Pé Na Lama. It brings the mood down a notch or two. It’s a bit darker, a bit less cheery, but a beautiful piece of poetry. The lyrics are rich, the delivery in the sort of quality that we’ve come to expect from Paulo Flores. He does pick things up in the end with Fundo do Poço, a sweetly melodic song that’s the perfect tonic for Ser da Lata. It has the same sort of Brazilian tilt to it that Meu Amor Quando me Beija has, and it’s also a good song for the early morning sunlight. I hope you’ve enjoyed your short trip through Sembas, even though you haven’t heard a single semba being played…

Meu Amor Quando me Beija
Ser da Lata
Fundo do Poço

Carrega ainda no Meu Amor Quando me Beija, o meu vício actual.
