Puzzle Sonoro

I remember the first time I heard Ikonoklasta. It was on MCK’s first CD, the legendary Trincheira de Ideias, on the track `Topikos pro Artigo’. I liked his flow, his choice of words, his lyricism, and above all I appreciated his intelligence. A couple of months after I heard Topikos pro Artigo my cousin Anderson let me in on Ikono’s aptly named Eu Contra o Mundo: Os Ficheiros Secretos album, where, for the first time, I got hit in the face with the full force of Ikono’s anger at the established system, as well as his highly opinionated world view. But the man also has a quirky sense of humor and several of his tracks would make me laugh out loud. Lol, I think it’s spelt. The album had terrible audio quality, which is not a hard feat if it’s being produced in a home studio and lacks any sort of fancy arrangements, but we didn’t care, and neither did he. The lyrics and the rap were what we were after.

After the underground success of Ficheiros Secretos, he came out with ‘As Melhores Coisas na Vida São de Graça” (The Best Things in Life are Free), a milder, more introspective, and highly personalized and experimental album. Puzzle Sonoro is one of its standout tracks, as well as 2000 Dikas, a Lounge favorite. At 9:34, Puzzle Sonoro is one of the longest Portuguese hip-hop tracks you’ll find anywhere. It’s a story about death involving three characters and narrated by one of them (Ikonoklasta). First, Ikono sets the scene and gives us each man’s story and outlook on life, complete with their daily problems and what was bothering them that fateful afternoon. The climax comes when Ikono saves one of the characters life from a falling pile of cement blocks, dropped by his construction worker friend, the third character in the story. Ikonoklasta dies, as the pile of rocks falls on him instead, and goes on to talk about the experience of dying and the feeling of nothingness. If you don’t understand Portuguese, click play anyway and at least enjoy the aural qualities and sick wordplay of this enthralling song.

Puzzle Sonoro

Carrega no play e curte o som, todo ele.
