Ex-Combatentes by Paulo Flores: Ilhas

Ilhas is the third and final installment of our aural journey through Paulo Flores' magum opus, Ex-Combatentes. He is the man of the hour, Paulo Flores - he's just completed a series of intimate concerts at Elinga Teatro and is now heading to Lisbon for a couple more. Ilhas is the third and final CD of Ex-Combatentes, and it's characterized by a rich variety of rhythms and genres, from sweeping melodic ballads to iconic sembas to Cape Verdean funana, touched up with the odd blues track and even a slow deconstructed samba featuring Mayra Andrade (featured on Caipirinha Lounge's Lusofonia Acústica). Ilhas features both Portuguese and creole, such is the abundance of songs inspired by the Luso archipelago.

Eu Quero é Paz is the bluesy track I alluded to earlier, included here because it is quite unlike any of Paulo Flores' earlier work, and it reminds me a it of Pé na Lama. Filhos da Kianda represents the island flavor of this CD and is just to damn beautiful to pass up. Gepê however, went on to become one of Paulo's most successful recent tracks, ascending to that status of Angolan party and wedding staple reserved for only the best sembas. And this concludes our trip through Ex-Combatentes, which proved to be one hell of a trilogy, to be listened to again and again.

Cada viagem tem o seu fim, e o CD Ilhas vem sinalizar a finalização do nosso passeio auricular pela obra da vida do Paulo Flores, a trilogia Ex-Combatentes. O kota Paulo é o homem do momento, a vir de uma recem terminada série de concertos íntimos no Elinga Teatro e agora a caminho de outra série de concertos em Lisboa. Caracterizado por uma rica variedade de ritmos e sonoridades, desde guitarras eléctricas a a sembas estrondosos a 'sambas em prelúdios' com Mayra Andrade (este último incluído na mixtape Lusofonia Acústica do Lounge), o CD Ilhas é o último dos Ex-Combatentes que teremos prazer de ouvir. Tem a distinção de ter várias músicas inspiradas por Cabo Verder, e por isso ouve-se não só português mas também crioulo.

É no Eu Quero é Paz onde podemos ouvir a tal guitarra eléctrica sobre a qual aludi, uma música blues que não tem nada a ver com que o Paulo Flores nos habituou ao longo dos anos, mas que faz lembrar Pé na Lama. Filhos da Kianda representa o espírito de ilha deste CD com as suas alusões à Kianda e a Iemanjá (será a mesma deusa, no fundo?), e é lindíssima. Mas Gepê ja se tornou mas que conhecida, tendo-se tornado uma das músicas mais bem sucedidas do kota Paulo dos últimos tempos. Ja subiu de patamar e hoje é imprescindível em qualquer boda que seja boda deste nome. E assim termina a nossa digressão pelos Ex-Combatentes, que tem provado ser uma trilogia como deve ser, pra se ouvir vezes sem fim.
