Caipirinha Lounge Jazz Sessions: Sara Serpa

After such tumultuous day like today, spent glued in front of BBC and CNN where the only music on offer were the chants of the valiant Egyptian demonstrators in Tahrir Square, nothing like pure, late night jazz to help cap a historic day and take your mind off things for a bit. My aural elixir of choice tonight is Sara Serpa, a stunning Portuguese jazz musician introduced to me by Mr. Philip Graham. You would probably not even know she is Portuguese as her style of singing jazz is usually devoid of words; rather, she uses her voice as an instrument, improvising just like the bassist of a jazz ensemble or even the saxophonist. The song Praia, off her 2008 album of the same name, is an exceptional example of that. But she can also sing using actual words, and when she does, the effect is beautiful, as exemplified on her duet with Greg Osby's saxophone, Two of One. The great American saxophonist invited Sara to feature in his latest project, the 9 Levels album. What a lovely find and what a session to end the day with.

Depois de um dia tão cheio de emoção como foi o dia de hoje, um dia em que fiquei colado á BBC e á CNN a querer saber tudo e mais um pouco sobre os acontecimentos do Cairo e onde a única música ao meu dispor eram os cânticos dos corajosos demonstradores na Praça de Tahrir, nada melhor que um bom jazz para me fazer esquecer um pouco o presente. O elixir auricular que escolhi esta noite foram as músicas da Sara Serpa, cantora sobre a qual só conheci a pouco tempo por intermédio do Sr. Philip Graham. Nem sequer saberia que ela é portuguesa porque o seu estilo de cantar o jazz não é com palavras, mas sim com a arte do improviso. Ela usa a sua voz como se fosse um instrumento, tal como o baixista ou o saxofonista faz da improvisação a sua letra num jazz bem feito. A música Praia, acima, é um bom exemplo disso. Mas quando lhe dá para usar palavras, também o faz, e com belo efeito. Basta ouvir o seu dueto com o saxofone do Greg Osby, Two of One. Este grande saxofonista americano convidou a Sara para participar no seu projecto '9 Levels'. Que cantora, que voz. E que sessão de jazz para terminar um dia como este.
