Late at night, when I'm in the mood for something slow and jazzy, something mesmerizing and sophisticated, I put on a Concha Buika record. Aside from the fact that I'm infatuated by her raw sensuality and fervor, I do think she's an immensely talented artist and a phenomenal musician. Everytime I hear her voice it's like hearing it again for the first time...you never get fully used to its distinctive sultry aroma, its depth, or its range. Buika has been featured on the Lounge before, but it's her latest album, El Último Trago, that's been haunting me as of late. It's a tribute to the famous Mexican ranchera singer Chavela Vargas, and contains numerous hits of hers. The renditions are done in an intriguing mix of Buika's favorite genres, including flamenco, soul, and of course, jazz.

Buika recorded this album in Cuba, and its influence is notable, especially because of Chucho Valdés presence. The afro-cuban jazz maestro accompanied Buika on the album, and his are the hands creating the exquisite piano melodies heard on El Último Trago. Included in this post are three beautiful songs by Chavela Vargas as sung by Concha Buika. The first, Cruz de Olvido, is a testament to Vargas' poetry, Valdés' piano skills and Buika's voice; Se me Hizo Facil is a similar track but with a slower tempo. Lastly there is Luz de Luna, a much jazzier track complete with a backing horn section.

De madrugada, quando quero ouvir algo lento e agradável, jazzy, sofisticado e incomum de preferência, ponho na aparelhagem um álbum da Concha Buika. Continuo enfeitiçado pela sua sensualidade intensa e o seu fervor artístico, e a considero uma artista verdadeiramente talentosa. Criadora de melodias apaixonantes. Sempre que oiço a sua voz, é como se fosse a primeira vez...nunca me habituei ao seu aroma distinto, á sua subtileza, ao seu alcance. A Buika já foi perfilada aqui no Lounge várias vezes, mas é do seu último álbum, El Último Trago, sobre o qual quero falar hoje. É uma homenagem à cantora mexicana Chavela Vargas, e contém diversos éxitos da mesma, feitos a la Concha Buika, ou seja, numa mistura de flamenco, soul, e, claro, jazz.

A Buika gravou este álbum em Cuba, o que ofereceu ao disco uma influência notável do maestro afro-cubano de jazz, o Chucho Valdés. Ao dançarem por cima das teclas do piano, os seus dedos acompanharam lindamente a voz da Buika no El Último Trago. Incluídas neste post estão três canções da Chavela Vargas reinterpretadas pela Buika. A primeira, Cruz de Olvido, é um testamento à poesía da Vargas, as habilidades "pianísticas" do Chucho Valdés, e a voz da Buika; Se Me Hizo Facil é uma faixa parecida mas um pouco mais lenta. Por último temos Luz de Lunda, uma faixa muito mais jazzy e viva.
