How do I not make this all sappy-like? This man doesn't sing in Portuguese - the closest he's come to Lusophone music and culture is a trip we took to Brazil last year, the few bossa nova songs he has on his iPod - some Elis Regina, some Bebel Gilberto here and there, a bit of Seu Jorge to spice things up - and Spanish/quasi-Portuguese interactions he had with my Angolan family when we spent a spring break at my uncle's home in Madrid. But he's my roommate, and much more than that, a very good friend. Who happens to create very good music. He taught himself to play guitar, never had any formal vocal lessons, records music in the room next to me in an improvised, ramshackle studio, but the end product sounds like a million bucks. I couldn't pass up the opportunity to feature him here at the Lounge, at a time where he just released his first EP, which you can download here.

Included here are my three favorite songs from his six-song EP. Three songs that I got to listen to for interminabe amounts of time as they were being created at all hours of the day right next to where my pillow is and I lay my head to sleep...so yeah, at times I hated them a little bit. But all in good fun, because if they weren't good they probably wouldn't be here. Learn From the Ground was inspired by the 6 month trip we took to South America with our other roommate, another good man, while I Got That Good Sh-t, are pretty self-explanatory jams, if you pay attention to the lyrics. The sound's poppy, the mood is fun, the beats are dope and the music is genuine. The two things we've created since we met long ago, the Lounge and his music, finally meet up.

Este jovem aí, na foto, nem canta em português. O seu contacto a música e cultura lusófona resume-se em alguns temas de Elis Regina, Bebel Gilberto, e até um pouco de Seu Jorge no seu iPod, e nas interações cómicas numa espécie de espanhol-português que ele teve com os meus tios em Madrid durante umas férias da páscoa. Mas é o meu roommate e um ganda amigo, daqueles que não se encontram à toa. Meu camarada das viagens pela Amêrica do Sul. E o rapaz canta bem. Nunca teve aulas de voz, nem de guitarra, nem de produção, e o seu estúdo é o seu quarto, ao lado do meu, mas sim senhora, o producto final saiu muito bem feito. Não podia, pois, perder a oportunidade de promover o meu kamba, principalmente não agora que ele acaba de lançar o seu primeiro EP, que pode ser “downloudado” aqui.

Incluídos aqui estam os meus três sons preferidos do seu primeiro EP, que contem 6 faixas. Três sons que ouvia quase que interminávelmente a qualquer hora do dia, mesmo ao lado da minha almofada (…claro que por vezes nem podia mais ouvir uma única música, não vá o diabo tece-las!). Mas sempre na boa onda, porque se não fossem bons não estariam aqui. Learn From the Ground foi inspirado nas viagens que fizemos pela Argentina e Brasil com o nosso terceiro camarada, outro ganda kamba, e I Got That Good Sh-t não precisam de explicação. O som é uma espécie de pop, a vibe é relaxada, a batida é fixe e a música é genuína. As duas coisas que criamos ao longo dos meses, o Lounge e a música dele, finalmente se cruzam.
