1 Uik Project, by Enchufada

1-Uik Project (One Week Project) is an initiative by Portugal's Enchufada label, started by the same guys who make up Buraka Som Sistema (Kalaf, Lil John, and Riot). Believe it or not, those guys have a softer, more relaxed side. It's not all hard kuduro beats. The 1 Uik Project is their stunning display of artistic diversity, proof of their musical and creative range. I’ll let them explain their project in their own words:

“Is it possible to put an album together in one week? Maybe not! But… arriving in Lisbon on a sunny August where life seems to be in slow motion, 148 minutes of conversations with the artist Berry Bickle recorded on minidisk, beats rolling, rimes flowing and a brand new jazz bass, were enough reasons to try. Kalaf and Lil’John decided to start a one-week musical journey to create 45 minutes of poetry and rhythm. To spice things up, they invited friends and guests such as Melo D, Baggi, João Gomes (Spaceboys), André Fernandes, Cyz and Dora Cruz.”

They released a striking album called Strategies of Survival, full of laid-back beats and spoken verse by Buraka’s Kalaf. Unfortunately I can’t find it anywhere. Nonetheless, below you will find video clips of two of their best songs. Brada, available for download below, features Lounge favorite Coca o FSM, while Serenata (Spring Samba) displays Kalaf’s skills as a spoken-verse poet.

Music like this is food for the soul. Alimento pr'alma, say portuguese-speakers. Enjoy the chilled out side of the Buraka boys.

O 1-Uik Project é uma iniciativa dos Portugueses da label Enchufada, os mesmos por detrás do furacão afro que é os Buraka Som Sistema. Custa acreditar, mas aqueles bradas têm uma vibe mas soft e mais íntima. Pelos vistos, para eles, nem tudo na vida é kuduro. O 1-Uik Project é sim uma bela amostra da sua versatilidade sonora e criativa. Eis o projecto nas suas próprias palavras:

“Será que é possível fazer um álbum em uma semana? Talvez não! Mas...chegando à Lisboa numa tarde ensolarada de Agosto onde a vida parece andar em câmara lenta, com uma conversa de 148 minutos do artista Berry Bickle gravada num disco, com os beats a rolarem e as rimas a fluir acompanhadas por um contrabaixo de jazz novinho em folha, tínhamos razões de sobra para tentar. O Kalaf e o Lil’ John decidaram embarcar nesta viagem de uma semana, reduzida em 45 minutos de ritmo e poesia. Para apimentarem as coisas, convidaram amigos tais como o Melo D, o Baggi João Gomes (Spaceboys), o André Fernades, o Cyz e a Dora Cruz.”

Pouco depois lançaram um segundo álbum, o melancólico Strategies of Survival, cheio de beats relaxados e ‘spoken verse’ do Kalaf. Infelizmente, não tenho em minha posse nenhum dos álbuns. Mas pelo menos, em baixo encontra dois vídeo clips dos seus dois melhores sons. Brada, disponível para download acima, conta com a participação de um dos preferidos do Lounge, o Coca, enquanto que o Serenata (Spring Samba) mostra mais uma vez a incarnação de Kalaf como poeta e não kudurista. Mesmo havendo quem diz que kuduro é poesia...
