Late Nite Lounge Vol. 6: Intoxicating Basslines from England and Japan

An arduous combination of exams, final papers, work, and my impending trip to Luanda (8 days) have made updating the Lounge a bit more difficult than I would like. But seeing how it’s the last night of the weekend, I couldn’t leave you (or myself) without this week’s Late Nite Lounge series. Here We Are feat. Lottie Child, by Spiral System (England) – Here We Are has the sickest bassline I have heard in recent memory. I first heard this song in my place of work and was transfixed, wondering who exactly became possessed enough to concoct this bass rhythm. Spiral System is formed by London duo Joe Crisp and Cliff Ovenden, and the alluring vocals you hear on this track are by Lottie Child, a multilingual diva with a penchant for climbing buildings. The band’s influences range from Thievery Corporation to Pharell to Miles Davis, and their debut cd In Your Dreams is one I’d play in the late hours of the night.

Arctic Circle, by Indigo Jam Unit (Japan) – Listening to Arctic Circle is an experience in and of itself. My favorite way to hear this track? With the room dark with mood lighting, the volume comfortably high, and my eyes closed. Sometimes I want to unwind and I play this track and only this track, and I feel reinvigorated. It begins innocently but once that bassline starts, it grabs you and doesn’t let go, and the piano just adds to the magic. Indigo Jam are one of two musical acts from Japan that I am familiar with (the other being the Yoshida Brothers) but if this is what jazz in Japan sounds like, I am hooked.

O frenezim do fim d’ano começou. Estes dias a minha vida tem sido um corre-corre recheado de exames, redacções, trabalho, e as actividades relativas a minha viagem para Luanda (faltam 8 dias!). Como resultado a actualização do blog sofreu um pouco. Mas já que esta é a última noite do fim de semana, não podia deixar de postar o Late Nite Lounge e tranquilizar a vossa madrugada. Here We Are feat. Lottie Child, por Spiral System (Inglaterra) – O baixo na música Here We Are é de outro mundo. Ha muito tempo que não ouvia um baixo tocado desta maneira. A primeira vez que ouvi este som foi no meu local de trabalho, e desde lá tenho sido refém da sua magia. Spiral System é um duo inglês formado por Joe Crisp e Cliff Ovenden, e as vocais desta música são da autoria de Lottie Childs, uma diva multilingüe que adora trepar edíficios (não estou a brincar). Esta banda foi influenciada por artistas como os Thievery Corporation, o Pharell e ate Miles Davis, e o seu album de estreia, In Your Dreams, é para ser tocado durante a madrugada, enquanto o resto da cidade dorme.

Arctic Cirlce, por Indigo Jam Unit (Japão) – O acto de ouvir Arctic Circle é uma experiência em si. A miha maneira prefrerida de ouvir esta música é sentado na minha cadeira preferida, com a sala escura, onde as sombras são acentuadas pela luz do fundo, e o volume confortávelmente alto. Fecho os olhos e deixo a música ‘me levar.’ As vezes quando o stress começa a mostrar sinais alarmantes, basta tocar esta música para descontrair-me. Ela começa de uma maneira inocente, mas rápidamente o baixo toma conta de nós e não nos larga mais. Então quando entra o piano...aiué. Os Indigo Jam Unit são uma banda japonesa, a única banda daquele país que eu conheço depois dos Yoshida Brothers. Mas se o jazz no Japão é assim, ainda tenho muito que aprender (e ouvir).
