Angola Soundtrack: The Unique Sound Of Luanda (1968-1976)

Samy Ben Redjeb, founder of the famed German label Analog Africa, is yet another man who couldn't resist the undeniable allure of vintage Angolan popular music. Part of a larger, and growing, trend that has seen popular Angolan music featured in such widely known media outlets as NPR, Portuguese film festival IndieLisboa, and of course Maianga's 2009 realease Comfusões 1, Redjeb's release is one of the most complete and original compilations of the golden era of Angolan music that money can buy, up there with such well known classics as Soul of Angola and Angola - The Greatest Songs from the 60s and 70s. Analog's Angola Soundtrack has many songs that you won't find in either of those compilations, including rare works by Jovens do Prenda, David Zé and Africa Show, among several others. Samy actually went to Luanda to find and talk to many of the artists featured on his compilation; read on about his adventure in the press release below.

"For its ninth release, Analog Africa unearths musical gems from Angola, the former Portuguese colony in south central Africa. The compilation ‘Angola Soundtrack‘ includes tracks from 1965 – 1976, arguably the golden era of Angolan music.

Angolan music is truly unique and stands on its own as a sound that can only be found in that part of the world. Rhythms such as Rebita, Kazukuta, Semba and Merengue, all of which are presented on ‘Angola Soundtrack’, might be unfamiliar to most listeners, but they are superbly melodic and highly danceable, a powerful confluence of traditional rhythms from Luanda’s islands, psychedelic guitar sounds imported from neighboring Congo, Latin grooves, old school Caribbean merengue and the hard beat of the Angolan carnival bands conspired to create the modern music of Angola. These sounds were immortalized by two excellent recording companies – Fadiang (Fábrica de Discos Angolano) and Valentim de Carvalho.

The nascent Angolan music scene was set on fire by a small group of courageous singers, backed by an array of super tight bands and led by extraordinary guitarists who revolutionized the musical and the political panorama of the 60s and 70s. These great electric bands of Angola were a well-kept secret until the late 90s when France-based music label Buda Musique released a short-lived series of Angolan music compiled by Ariel de Bigault.

Inspired and taken aback, these releases proved to be crucially influential to Analog Africa’s founder Samy Ben Redjeb: 'Listening to Angolan music suddenly became part of my daily life and when my label was founded a few years later, the idea of releasing an Angolan compilation was never too far away from my mind.

From the nine Analog Africa releases thus far, ‘Angola Soundtrack‘ has been the most difficult to create. The travel visa was in itself a struggle and logistically and financially Luanda is a nightmare. After two unsuccessful years, I eventually found shelter at a home in Prenda, a musseque (township) outside of the capital. I had come to this former Portuguese colony to meet my favorite Angolan musicians, to convey my love and admiration for what they have created, as well as license some of my favorite tunes for my label while documenting their story.

I had no idea what to expect from the trip – more than once was I told to expect complicated situations, and that if I thought I knew Africa, I should wait until I experience Luanda. I was prepared for the worst. To my surprise I encountered an amazingly positive vibe and, except for heavy traffic jams and high costs, I am entirely grateful of my Angolan experience.
With the support of Zé Keno, the legendary guitarist of Jovens Do Prenda, I managed to meet most of the composers of the songs featured here. The numerous anecdotes they provided are presented in the 44-page booklet that comes with this compilation.'"

Bambas e Biritas Vol. 1, by BiD

This is without a doubt one of the smoothest, most eclectic albums of contemporary Brazilian music (it was released in 2004). It's an astonishing piece of work for its originality, groove and vibe - yet another album that proves that São Paulo is truly Brazil's musical capital (sorry cariocas!). Envisioned and created by revered Brazilian music producer and DJ BiD (Eduardo Bidlovski), Bambas e Biritas (spliffs and booze in Portuguese) fuses Brazilian musicality with funk, soul, hip-hop, and electronica. The result is a highly cosmopolitan record featuring such contemporary Brazilian stars as Elza Soares, Carlos Daffé, Black Allen, and that man Seu Jorge on the track E Depois, one of my favorite songs of all time and a song featured on what is perhaps Putumayo's best compilation, Brazilian Lounge.

Não Pára is both the opening song of the album as well as this post's introduction into the sound of BiD. Featuring Carlos Daffé, it puts you in a relaxed mood and introduces your ear drums to what this album is all about and what's about to come next. Perplexed, your eardrums attempt to understand and make sense of the sublime rhythms engulfing their existence. And what comes next is even better. To me it's the best song on the album after E Depois: a laid-back electronica/hip-hop/soul/funk/drum'n'bass mash-up called Na Noite se Resolve that morphs in and out of those genres into something greater, something unique. The man you hear rapping to his heart's content is Black Alien, and DJ Soul Singer helped out with production. Drunk on music, your eardrums brace themselves for the next song, Maestro do Canão featuring Rappin' Hood and Funk Buia. It's another electronica/hip-hop track that shows you that the practice of fusing disparate genres into a coherent whole is alive and well in São Paulo, Brazil. Give your eardrums something to celebrate. There's a lot more from where that came from, so buy the album.

Não Pára
Na Noite se Resolve
Maestro do Canão

A música é relaxante, a vibe é laid-back.

Scenes from a memorable performance: Luísa Maita's Encore

Last night I had the unique pleasure of seeing Luísa Maita perform live at the Bohemian Caverns in downtown DC, and it was a marvelous concert. It was my first time at that particular venue and the interior is actually modeled to look like a cavern, complete with faux-stone walls and low ceilings. Nonetheless the atmosphere was intimate and perfect for the type of music played by "the new voice of Brazil", as NPR likes to call her. I had the chance to meet and have a fruitful chat with both Luísa Maita and Cumbancha's Director of Marketing & Promotion Simeon Chapin, both wonderful people who I hope have the brightest and most successful of times ahead of them. The tour continues along the Eastern US, and tonight Luísa hits up Philadelphia!

Below is a scene from Luísa's DOUBLE encore: Lero-Lero, the most applauded song of the night. The video is by Cumbancha, for I forgot my camera :(

Lusophone Reggae on 8tracks

Wednesday morming. Partly cloudy skies. Tired from last night's work. The scene outside is a mix of swirling leaves and bursts of oranges and yellows: Fall is here in full force. Groggy from sleep, a recurring song keeps playing in my head. I think I dreamt of reggae last night. And I'm still in the mood for it this morning. Press play and listen to this 18 song collection of some unique Lusophone reggae and dub tracks from Brazil, Portugal, Mozambique, and Angola. Featured artists include Paulo Flores on the beautiful Canto a Solta, 340ml (of course), a Bob Marley cover from Céu, and Carlos Lamartine's Kuale N'go Valodo, all psychedelic-like.

I don't enjoy crappy house music and mindless headbanging techno either. But when it's done right, house music can be riveting. Nothing gets the heart pumping quite like it, and quality DJs know this. Erick Morillo is one of those quality DJs, a man that has perfected the art of house music. I had the unique pleasure of seeing him live at Pacha in New York City on his birthday night, and it was without a doubt the best DJ set that I have ever experienced. The man can dj. Many, including myself, consider him the top DJ in the world. And anyone in Luanda reading this will have the opportunity to see him live at Lookal Club at the Ilha de Lunda on 10 November. It promises to be a memorable night.

Caipirinha Lounge Cinema: Diário do Incorrigível Pt. 01, by Kid MC

The video below presents you with a window into the burgeoning Angolan rap scene. Kid MC is one of the country's better rappers, a proven lyricist with an explosive flow and persona that's quickly developing a large fan base throughout the entire country and beyond. Many in Angola are starting to compare him to Valete, and it's obvious the latter's influence on the former. The video below is from Kid's producer, label CEO and serial blogger Samurai of Madtapes. Access his site for anything Kid MC-related, but mostly just groove to the rhythm below.

Kid MC's newest CD, O Incorrigível, will be released in Luanda on 18 Dec 2010. Judging from this short 1:52 min clip, it's going to be something worth listening to.

Late Nite Lounge Vol. 32 - Palavras Ausentes, by Madredeus

Teresa Salgueiro of Madredeus, by Volume 12
There are some songs out there that have an almost therapeutic effect on the mind and spirit. Songs that gently massage your soul after a particularly exhausting (but ultimately rewarding) weekend of work. Palavras Ausentes by Madredeus is one of them. The soft lull and cadence of the song works like a soothing bath while the exquisite cadence of Teresa Salgueiro's voice wash away any remnants of stress that stubbornly clung to existence. Palavras Ausentes by Madredeus is perhaps one of the purest forms of 'beautiful music in portuguese', and this song is but one example of their genius. You can find it and more like it on their album Um Amor Infinito, along with such stellar tunes as Moro em Lisboa. Sit back, press play, turn up your volume and close your eyes...

Palavras Ausentes
