Luanda International Jazz Festival 2010 Countdown Series: Oliver Mtukudzi

Over the next couple of weeks the Lounge will highlight all the artists that will be present in this year's Luanda International Jazz Festival, many times using posts that have already been featured here. The line-up is mouthwatering and includes such jazz virtuosos as George Benson and Ronny Jordan, funky beats by Freshlyground and 340ml, coladera and batuque by Lura, Cameroonian tunes by Blick Bassy...the list goes on. The first featured artists will be the ones performing on Friday, the inaugural day of the Festival. Oliver Mtukudzi will be performing after Wyza and before 340ml, on the Palanca stage.

Tuku is coming to Luanda! Tuku, as Oliver Mtukudzi is affectionately known by his fans, is a stalwart of African music, adored and respected by many. A gifted musician, composer, and guitarist, he is one of the highest manifestations of Zimbabwean music and culture. Tuku is a prolific artist and has released more than 40 albums, with the most recent one being Dairai. He sings in Shona, Ndebele and English, the national languages of Zimbabwe, and has had so much domestic and international success that he can't even name all the awards he's one. Among them are two KORA Awards, including a Kora Lifetime Achievement Award bestowed on him in 2003.
Oliver Mtukudzi's music is a mixture of traditional Zimbabwean 'mbira' and South African 'maqanga', a mixture that his fans have dubbed Tuku Music.

Tuku is famous for his dedicated, energetic performances, capable of putting entire venues on their feet dancing. The band he is currently playing with are called The Black Spirits and they're the stuff of legends in both Zimbabwe and the rest of Southern Africa, known for their spirited and high energy performances. Besides being a singer, the multifaceted Mtukudzi is also a successful actor, and the soundtrack for a film he starred in, Neria, won various awards in South Africa.

I'm glad Tuku is coming to Luanda, because the only reason I started listening to his music was because of his upcoming show. Even though he's been extensively featured in Putumayo releases back in the States, I never took the time to get to know this artist. Since I've made the effort, I've become hooked on his epic song Raki, one of the best examples of Tuku Music and a gift to music. Also included here is Wasakara, a song of his that became a sort of anthem for the political opposition in Zimbabwe.
