Seu Jorge & Almaz

If there was ever a perfect psychedelic soul samba summer album, Seu Jorge & Almaz is probably it. It's a collaboration between Seu Jorge, Nação Zumbi collective Pupillo (drums) and Lúcio Maia (guitarist), along with António Pinto on bass. Each of the four are excellent, very well respected artists in their own right, and their on-studio chemistry on this album, their first together, is palpable. Seu Jorge is already known as one of the best voices in Brazil right now, with his deep baritone instantly recognized by anyone with an inkling of interest in contemporary MPB. Throw in one of the country's best guitarist in Lúcio Maia and a vicious drummer in Pupillo, plus a lot of artistic freedom and presence of mind, and you can begin to understand what this album is about.

When you listen to Seu Jorge & Almaz, it's difficult to find a song not to like on the CD. It's a relaxed vibe reminiscent of classic 70's psychedelic rock (not that I was alive back then), but it's strongly influenced by soul and samba, Seu Jorge's trademark genres, as well as healthy doses of jazz and pop. Produced by Beastie Boys producer Mário Caldato Jr, the album features English and Portuguese covers of jams by Tim Maia, Roy Ayers, Kraftwerk, Michael Jackson, Jorge Ben, the list continues. Among the standout tracks are Saudosa Bahía (it will put you right in this kind of mood), the cover of Roy Ayers' Everybody Loves the Sunshine (featured here), and the fresh take on the immortal Michael Jackson's Rock With You. But really, buy the album, because the above songs are but the tip of the iceberg. This album is another suggestion by Keita Mayanda, the man with all the Brazilian music.

Everybody Loves the Sunshine

With You do imortal Michael Jackson.
