Uxía

This blog on Lusophone music would be incomplete without the inclusion of Galician music. Galician, also known as Galego, is the mother tongue of the Portuguese language, and it is from Galego that Portuguese evolved. Galego is still spoken by about 3 million people worldwide and is most prominent in the Galician region of Spain, where over 90% of the population speaks it fluently. Native Portuguese and Spanish speakers will be able to read it and understand it just fine. And it sounds lovely, especially when sang by someone like Uxía.

Uxía is one of Galicia's most gifted musicians. I learned about her and the Galician language through Aline Frazão (as I previously had no idea of its existence), who also told me about another fine Galician musical group called Marful. The enjoyable Uxia has been making music since 1986 when she debuted with Foliada de Marzo, but it is Eterno Navegar, her latest album, that is profiled here. It's a flowing album heavily influenced and inspired by Galicia's strong maritime culture, and features collaborations with a host of Lusophone musicians such as Sara Tavares and Manecas Costa. The first track featured here, the luscious As Nossas Cores, features the beautiful Cape Verdean singer Sara Tavares interlinked with an acoustic guitar and a piano, while the lively and festive Berenguela features Manecas Costa on guitars and vocals as well as Eneida Marta and Jon Luz.

You can listen to Uxía's entire album (Eterno Navegar) on her beautifully maintained website, rich in information, complete with notes on each song where the singer described how she harnessed the inspiration to make these aurally pleasant compositions.

Nele particaparam artistas galegos e lusófonos, incluindo a Sara Tavares, o Manecas Costa, e a Eneida Marta.
