Cape Town Soundtrack: Madan, by Salif Keita & Remixed by Martin Solveig

Madan is our World Cup anthem. Not even Waka Waka can compete with this one. I heard it on DJ Nunas' World Cup mix Coupe D'Afrique '10, released by his duo AM Roots. If you have not yet downloaded this thundering mix, all the more reason to do so. Madan comes in after AM Roots' very own He Africa song, and it's absolutely infectious. Already a stunning track on its own, the original Madan appears on Salif Keita's Moffou album, the first album he released after returning home to Mali from exile in Paris. The version on DJ Nunas' mix was remixed by French DJ and Producer Martin Solveig.

Madan is an instant upper, sweeter and more effective than any drug. It's a classic of our Cape Town Soundtrack. We play it in the car as we drive into Cape Town looking for a good game and a good night. We blasted it from the car when Ghana won. We blasted it from the car as we drove along Cape Town's streets, among the soccer revelers, on our way to Green Point Stadium, waving the Spanish flag out of the window as Spain was about to play Portugal. We play it on the way to Long Street to get everyone in the mood. When the song comes on you look around the car and it's smiles everywhere. My cousin Victor, who always does the driving, can't contain himself. He probably looks like a madman to the other drivers. Us, crowded in the backseat, worsen our already cramped situation by dancing about. We can't resist...Madan is our World Cup anthem.

Se ainda não fez o download deste mix, vivamente aconselho. Bate bué. A música Madan vem logo à seguir ao He Africa dos AM Roots, e é delirante. Por si só, já é um grande 'brinde': a versão original de Madan aparece no disco Moffou do Salif Keita, o primeiro que ele lançou após regressar à casa depois do seu exílio em Paris. A versão da mix do DJ Nunas, e a deste post, foi remixada pelo DJ e productor francês Martin Solveig.

Madan é inebriante, mais potente que qualquer droga. É um clássico do nosso Cape Town Soundtrack. Tocamos-lhe no carro enquanto conduzimos para a cidade em busca de um bom jogo e uma melhor noite. Tocamos-lhe quando Ghana ganhou e a festa instalou-se na cidade (e no continente). Em alto volume, tocamos-lhe no carro enquanto conduziamos pelas ruas da cidade entre os fanáticos de futebol, com a bandeira da Espanha a dançar pela janela (porque entre nós são poucos os que apoiam as Quinas), à caminho do Green Point Stadium para ver Espanha-Portugal. Tocamos-lhe à caminho de Long Street para pôr todo mundo em boa disposição e com a moral elevada. Quando a música toca no carro, são sorrisos por todo lado. O nosso conductor de serviço, o primo Victor, quase que nem se contém, se calhar até os outros conductores pensam que ele é maluco. Nós, apertadíssimos no banco de trás, já a transbordar os limítes impostos pela lei, agravamos a situação por dançar à toa. É impossível resistir...Madan é o nosso hino do Mundial.

Cape Town Soundtrack: Sun in My Pocket, by Locnville

The first time I heard Sun in My Pocket was during a SuperSport commercial. SuperSport is pretty much the only channel we watch here in Cape Town, as it's the one that broadcasts live all World Cup matches plus all the pundit commentary we could ever wish for. They have a short little promotional segment called "Keep Your Shine On" that uses Sun in My Pocket as their soundtrack. Whenever that particular segment came on, I turned up the volume because I couldn't get enough of that jamming tune. At the time I thought that it was merely a jingle thought up by SuperSport...only about a week and a half after hearing it for the first time did I find out that Sun in My Pocket is the lead single and breakthrough track of Cape Town's very own electro-hop duo, Locnville.

They're an exciting young duo, Locnville. Twins, in fact. They're barely 20 years old but have been making music since they were seven, which probably explains why they're so adept at making such damn good tunes. Not only that, but they write, record, and produce all of their music. The guys behind Locnville, Andrew and Brian Chaplin (yeah, they're actually related to Charlie Chaplin) have been alternating their time between the US and Cape Town, and while some aspects of their sound are proudly South African, the hip-hop influence so present in their music is definitely American. The boys have been steadily gaining in popularity here in South Africa, constantly chopping the charts, and for me, Sun in My Pocket has become part of my Cape Town soundtrack. The sound of my World Cup experience.

Sun in My Pocket

A primeira vez que ouvi Sun in My Pocket foi durante uma publicidade da SuperSport. Como muito adepto de futebol residente em África Austral, a SuperSport é o canal que eu mais assisto. É quase o único, porque transmite em directo todos os jogos do Mundial e ainda por cima tem uma legião de comentadores e analistas sempre prontos a discutir cada e qualquer episódio contencioso de cada partida de futebol. A SuperSport tem um pequeno segmento promocional que gosta de exibir entre jogos de futebol intitulado “Keep Your Shine On” e que usa Sun in My Pocket como soundtrack. Sempre que era mostrado este segmento, levantava o volume porque curtia bué o som da publicidade. Na altura pensava que era uma simples música publicitária inventado pelo pessoal da SuperSport, e só semanas depois é que descobri que aquela tal simples música é tão somente uma das mais famosas músicas sul-africanas da actualidade e o principal single de um duo de electro-hop aqui mesmo de Cape Town, chamados Locnville.

Os Locnville são um duo com futuro. A banda é composta por dois irmãos gêmeos que mal fizeram 20 anos. São músicos desde os 7 anos, e talvez por isso é que são tão bons a fazerem música de jeito. Eles têm total controle sobre a sua música, e são eles que escrevem, gravam, e produzem o seu próprio trabalho. Os jovens por detrás dos Locnville chamam-se Andrew e Brian Chaplin (pois é, são mesmo parentes do famoso Charlie Chaplin) e têm alternado as suas vidas entre os Estados Unidos e Cape Town. Se há elementos do seu estilo musical que são ‘proudly South African’, já o mesmo não se pode dizer sobre a maneira que cantam, que é claramente inspirada pelo hip-hop americano, como os próprios admitem. Os Locnville têm se tornado cada vez mais famosos aqui em África do Sul e não só devido a sua fusão entre a electrónica e o hip-hop, e estão constantemente em polé position em todos os tops musicais do pais. Sun in My Pocket, por sua vez, tem se tornado como uma espécie de hino, parte integral da minha própria soundtrack de Cape Town.

AM Roots Does the World Cup

To all of you that want to get into that groovy African mood because you're just feeling this World Cup in your soul, you must check out AM Roots' World Cup inspired Mix. There is one each from DJ Nunas and DJ Filipe Narciso. DJ Nunas focuses on Afro-beat and has some sublime stuff from Salif Keita, Fela Kuti, AM Roots of course, and even Shakira and Freshlyground's World Cup Anthem for good measure. It's great for those dead times in between games, to keep the energy alive. DJ Filipe's Mix is a collection of vintage kizomba tracks, if you're in that sort of mood. A trip down memory lane, if you will. Both of them flow nicely, as the song selection is top notch. Links below:

Moving...

It’s Early Morning, and the sun isn’t even up yet. We all pile into the car, destination Port Elizabeth. There’s some amicable tension in the car, as my brother and I are supporting different teams. I’m for the Elephants, while he insists on supporting the selecção das quinas. He’ll learn his lesson.

The streets of Cape Town have a surreal quality to them, bathed in that peculiar pre-dawn light. To kick off our trip on the right footing, we put on 340ml’s Moving. It’s their first album, their debut into the world. Moving is more experimental than Sorry for the Delay, and incorporates more reggae and dub than the latter. Just the vibe I needed. I’ve only recently started listening to it seriously, as before I would concentrate mostly on the ridiculously sublime track that is Midnight.

Hang on to Yourself (Rachel) and Early Morning are two that I find myself listening to again and again. And of course, just to make things extra clichéd, Early Morning is the song I played as we set out on our 8 hour trip across South Africa. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for awhile – listen to 340ml while in SA.

É demanhã cedo, e o sol ainda nem sequer se levantou. Entramos todos no carro, encosta aqui encosta ali, destino Port Elizabeth. Há uma tensão amigável no carro, porque eu vou lá para apoiar os Elefantes da Costa do Marfim, e o meu irmão, a selecção das quinas. Um dia ele aprenderá.

As ruas de Cape Town estão compreensívelmente desertas, e o céu, aquela cor estanha que sonha com o aproximar do nascer do sol. Para começar a nossa viagem em grande, botamos o Moving dos 340ml na aparelhagem. É o primeiro álbum deles, a maneira que escolheram para nos conquistar. Moving é um pouco mais experimental que Sorry for the Delay, e contem mais reggae e dub que o seu sucessor. Mesmo a vibe que estava a precisar. Só há pouco tempo é que comecei a ouvir este CD com atenção nas letras, porque antes só devorava a sério o Midnight.

Hang on to Yourself (Rachel) e Early Morning são duas músicas do álbum que oiço com frequência. E, para tornar as coisas ainda mas previsíveis, Early Morning (Manhã Cedo) é a música que touco enquanto começamos a viagem de oito horas pelas paisagens da África do Sul. É que sempre quis ouvir os 340ml no pais deles...

Late Nite Lounge Vol. 21 - Club Sodade

Cape Town, South Africa.

The sky is black but dotted with clouds and the road is slick with rain, but no matter, the city is gripped in the best of all fevers, World Cup fever. We don't live on the city proper so as we roll along on the highway, the city rises up in the immediate distance, and next to it, lit up with powerful lights, Table Mountain. Imposing, serene, beautiful, mesmerizing, all at once. The perfect companion for the Mother City.

On the radio plays Club Sodade, that remix CD of Cesária Évora's most memorable songs. I had first heard it a couple of years ago but immediately dismissed it as yet another case of perfectly good, organic songs bastardized by a droning club beat. But after I heard the Bondade e Maldade afro-beat remix by Osunlade played by Coca o F.S.M. last week at Elinga, on one of those slightly balmy Luandan nights atop the patio of that mythic nightspot, in the company of some good people and gazing out at the Atlantic, something clicked. And hearing it again here in Cape Town, as we entered the city, was a welcome aural experience.

Miss Perfumado, remixed by 4 Hero, is also another winning remix of Cesária's timeless songs. It has a calmer electronica feel to it, more subdued and relaxed, a bit more chilled and downtempo. They are among the only remixes that can be salvaged from Club Sodade. Cheers for my cousin Songay for searching for days for these two beauties after we heard them at Elinga.

O céu está negro mas aqui e ali ainda se encontram nuvens. A estrada está molhada por causa da chuva que à bocado passou, mas ninguém dá por isso, porque aqui a febre do Mundial está forte. Não vivemos no centro da cidade por isso sempre que nos deslocamos pra lá rolamos pela autoestrada, e a Table Moutain aparece à nossa esquerda, toda ela majestosa e imponente, reluzente por causa dos holofotes apontados em sua direcção.

Na rádio toca Club Sodade, aquele CD de remixes das melhores músicas da Cesária Évora. A primeira vez que o ouvi foi a uns dois aninhos, e não queria nada com ele. Remixes electrónicas da Cesária? Desde quando é que ele precisa de ser remixada?! Mas agora, depois de ter ouvido a magia do Bondade e Maldade (afro-beat remix do Osunlade) no lugar correcto, numa sessão de Chokolate Quente no Elinga na semana passada, com o Coca DJing, a olhar para a baâ e na companhia de muito boa gente, mudei um pouco de opinião. E agora, a ouvi-la pela segunda vez enquanto entramos para Cape Town, está delicioso.

Miss Perfumado, remixado por 4 Hero, é outra das boas remixes deste álbum. É uma música mais calma, mais relaxed, com uma vibe mais downtempo. Esta e Bondade e Maldade são das melhores remixes do álbum, porque outras não estão assim grande coisa. Obrigado ao primo Songay por ter encontrado estas músicas depois de muitas horas de procura!
