Caipirinha Lounge Cinema: Pas de Deux, by Thiago Pethit

Where is Brazilian music going?

When people ask me about Brazilian music I'm always tempted to talk about bossa nova and ramble on about António Carlos Jobim and Vinicius de Moraes; or perhaps I talk about the versatility of MPB and point to the brilliant Seu Jorge as an example of all that's great about the genre. Lately however the script has changed; it's hard not to notice the emerging talent of musicians such as Tulipa Ruiz and the subject of this post, Thiago Pethit. The music that they are making is something truly unique and truly innovative. On August 20 Thiago Pethit is coming out with a new album, Estrela Decadente, and one of Brazil's best, Kassin, is in charge of production; Pas de Deux is the album's first single. This is where  Brazilian music is going.

Pas de Deux

Pra onde vai a música brasileira?

Mariana Aydar

Mariana Aydar, by Khadija Alves
I found out about her and that beautiful, assured voice of hers in the most random of places: my Last.fm profile, which I visit maybe twice a month on a good month. So my ‘discovery’ of this stellar Brazilian singer was due to a bot on Last.fm telling me I might like her music. I clicked on the link and, two albums later, I owe that bot a huge thank you. Mariana Aydar is part of the resurgence of innovative MPB singers (neo MPB/nu MPB if you will?) from São Paulo of course, of the same caliber as Tulipa Ruíz, Tiê (both of who I met here in New York last week!), and Thiago Pethit, among others. We both went to uni in the same city, Boston, but that’s where our similarities end: Mariana studied cello, guitar and singing and then moved to Paris, met Seu Jorge, impressed him enough for him to have her open his shows around Europe, and thus launched a successful, rewarding career.

I got deep into Mariana’s music, and it’s hard not to. I must’ve listened to Palavras Não Faltam several times on end, eventually admitting defeat and just putting it on repeat, and each time it was a bit different, or perhaps you focus on different parts of the song. Another song I found myself listening to repeatedly was Beleza, a lovely duet she does with the beautiful and talented Mayra Andrade. I was still high on that song when I found this little treat of a video of the two of them singing Tunuka in the streets. Seeing them collaborate and make music like this together is an ode to Lusophone music. And lastly there is O Samba me Perseque, that Mariana sings with the legendary Zeca Pagodinho.

All these songs can be found in her latest album, ‘Peixes Pássaros Pessoas’. I’ve heard here and there that’s she’s planning to launch a new album, so watch her space!

Palavras não faltam
Beleza
O samba me persegue

‘O samba me perseque, e eu não vou negar.’

A Coruja e o Coração, by Tiê

Tiê is among my favorite musical discoveries of this year. I fell in love not only with her music but with her the manner with which she approaches her music, the honesty and introspection of her lyrics, and the intimate nature with which she invites us to share her compositions. So I was quite excited to hear her sophomore album, A Coruja e o Coração. However I have to say that after several listens I wasn’t quite as impressed; the magic of Sweet Jardim just wasn’t there for me. Perhaps it was always going to be an uphill battle to surpass Sweet Jardim, an album I hold in very high esteem. Nevertheless A Coruja e a Coração is a good album and it’s very accessible, it just lacks that extra ingredient that made Sweet Jardim so special. You don’t find in it any songs with the caliber of Assinado Eu or A Bailarina e o Astronauta. Among the standout songs in her second album is her rendition of Mapa Mundi, which Tiago Pethit sings here, and Te Mereço, which is her song Te Valorizo from her first album but with different lyrics. Good songs, good album, but not the same musical greatness, the same breath of fresh air that was Sweet Jardim.

Mapa Mundi

Tiê, by Eduardo_Gabriel
Every once in awhile you yearn for things that are as of yet unknown to you, and then when you find it you feel as if it's exactly what you needed, exactly what you wanted. It happens with novels, food, film, and of course, music. That's how I felt upon listening to Tiê for the first time. I felt as if I've known her music all along, and wondered how I could have gone so long without it. Her debut album Sweet Jardim is a marvel, one that is still talked about with admiration 2 years after its 2009 release date. Tiê herself is an interesting story; she was a former model, entrepreneur and restaurateur all before she became a professional musician.

I'm guessing that she's found the most success as a musician. As you listen to her music you might start to see some similarity with the music of her fellow Paulista musicians and friends at the forefront of this 'Brazilian folk pop' movement, such as Tulipa Ruíz and Thiago Pethit. Sweet Jardim is a beautiful album: simple, raw, and intimately honest. The three tracks I chose to share with you here all showcase her warm, inviting voice, such as the album opener Assinado Eu. It's a sublime track, just voice and guitar (what more do you need?) a la Carla Bruni. Quinto Andar is another favorite of mine for its melody, and Sweet Jardim, shot and sweet at 2:25, is the album closer. But the other 7 songs of the album are just as superb, and listening to Sweet Jardim might be the best 30 minutes you'll have this weekend in terms of music.

Assinado Eu
Quinto Andar
Sweet Jardim

Thiago Pethit

Thiago Pethit, por Eduardo_Gabriel
I chose not to have a television at home; rather, I have a rather nice sound system that plays my music crisp and clear, with a potent bass and excellent audio quality. And so it was that yesterday, after listening to Thiago Pethit's debut album on my headphones on the bus from Washington DC back to New York, and being mesmerized by the song lyrics, their unique quality, the familiar peculiarity of Pethit's music, I sat down in my living room with a glass of passion fruit juice in hand, dimmed the lights, and played Fuga N°1, loudly, once, twice, three times, and each time was better than the last.

Thiago Pethit is part of São Paulo's new generation of musicians, a generation that stretches the boundaries of what contemporary Brazilian music is possible by creating something entirely unique. It's difficult for me to classify his music, as it's a type of alternative, slightly 'rockish' concoction (a la Mumford & Sons) with heavy elements of folk that actually reminded me of Madredeus. It's at once light and expansive, drawing from a multitude of influences but still maintaining a Brazilian undertone with the constante presence of the cavaquinho. But Thiago Pethit also sings in English, and when he does you forget you're listening to a Brazilian singer.

Pethit's debut album, Berlin, Texas, was entirely independently produced by the musician and is not affiliated with any label whatsoever. The man paid for it with his own money. How about that? Among the standout tracks on this gorgeous album is the aforementioned Fuga N°1, my favorite track on the album, and the beautiful Mapa-Múndi.

Mapa-Múndi
Fuga N°1

Tulipa Ruíz, by Gerardo Lazzari
You press play on the song Efêmera and a softly strummed guitar greets your expectant eardrums, followed by a somewhat laid back percussionist doing his thing, and then that voice. That beautiful, exquisite voice. The voice comes from a body that belongs to a woman that goes by the name of Tulipa Ruíz, and she's Brazil's newest MBP sensation, shooting to prominence following well-received and critically acclaimed live performances. Her album was an instant success, as her fans were left captivated with her witty lyrics, simple and subtle rhythms, and experimental musicality, akin to Cibelle. The talented composer and cartoonist calls her music "pop florestal', but I don't know how to classify her style of music. It's a very unique sound, a sound that's truly hers and makes pigeonholing it near impossible. Press play on Do Amor and embark on the musical journey that it is to see what I mean. Thanks Aline for sharing this artist with me...

Efêmera
Do Amor
