Weekly Roundup of Sorts, plus Other Fun News

Caipirinha
Well. I’m not even gonna pretend that these roundups/weekly summaries are weekly anymore, or that they ever were. Nonetheless, it has been an exciting couple of weeks here at the lounge. Since the last weekly roundup the Lounge surpassed 3 months of existence and is rapidly approaching its fourth month. MCK was the post immediately after that, gracing us with real Angolan hip-hop, one of the best the streets of Luanda have ever produced. Next up was some deep house by AM Roots, an Angolan-Mozambican duo currently based in NYC. DJ Furreta has some competition. Then Vanessa da Mata’s song Boa Sorte/Good Luck was featured along with its kizomba remix by Nelson Freitas feat. Chelsy Shantel, and not to be outdone in the remix department Madredeus made yet another appearance with some electronic, downtempo remixes of their own. Shortly after that post Michael Jackson died and we all sort of freaked out.

Vanessa da Mata shook us out of that stupor with some fine, Brazilian-flavored reggae jams (and that is one beautiful photo by Mario Lanini) and around that same time Caipirinha Lounge was admitted into Hype Machine, perhaps the biggest mp3 blog aggregator on the world wide web. Soon thereafter, Saudades de Lisboa became Saudades de Luanda and a nostalgic song by Paulo Flores song welcomed the change. Next, 50 Cent’s In Da Club was kizombafied, and Suzanna Lubrano’s stunning face, er, I mean, voice, sung classic Cape Verdean kizomba songs from her breakthrough third album. And there’s even a video of her to top it all off. The last couple of days saw a post on kizomba as sung, in English, by Frenchman Jehro, and one of my favorite songs of the past few months, Midnight, by the Mozambique/South African band 340ml, is the latest post.

(Bi)Weekly Roundup, and 5000 Visits

caipirinha
Since the last weekly roundup, a lot has (not) happened at the lounge. For one, I haven’t done a weekly roundup at the end of each week. The last two weeks started with a post about Madredeus and their beautiful song Moro em Lisboa. Not long after, Lounge reader Jan gave me the heads up on Cibelle, which has been a favorite of mine. I listen to her almost daily. Next, Sara Tavares was featured in the Saudades de Lisboa series with Lisboa Kuya, as well as Amália Rodrigues with Lisboa Antiga. Federico Aubele, Kevin Johansen, Natalia Clavier and the Bajofondo Tango Club were featured in the ‘Not in Portuguese’ section, this time with an Argentine flavor, while Duo Ouro Negro graced us with a Beatles song in Portuguese. Yuri da Cunha’s sembas topped things off nicely.

Oh, and Caipirinha Lounge had its 2 month birthday this past 20th of May and passed the milestone of 5000 visitors…no big deal.

Thanks for reading, and more importantly, listening!

As Ultimas (2) Semanas no Lounge, e 5000 Visitas

Weekly Roundup of Sorts

Caipirinha
A video by Sara Tavares and another by Lura played in the cinema. Later, Bïa came by to croon two sultry, jazzy late night songs in French and Portuguese. Then the Nigerian Asa was featured for a little anglophone and Yoruba flavor, with three biting, soulful, and insightful tracks reminiscent of Bob Marley. Angolan reggae band Kussondulola broght things back to a lusophone atmosphere with three reggae jams that remind me just a bit of the great Tiken Jah Fakoly, in content rather than language. Lastly, I shared with you my love for the song Haja o que Houver, by Madredeus.
