Mabulu

Pemba, MocambiqueMaldeyeni starts off with two infectious electric guitars, and then a strong, organic drum beat drops, followed shortly by a steady, leathery voice that sounds paternal, wise even. Welcome to marrabenta, the national genre of Mozambique. It is the country’s dance music of choice, a genre influence by Mozambican folk rhythms fused with early Portuguese folk music. Mabulu adds a fresh, western spin on the genre, adding a hip hop element to it. It is comprised of old school marrabenta artists in their 60’s, such as Lisboa Matavel and Antonio Marcos, and fresh faced Mozambican rappers like Chiquinho and Chonyl, offering a unique generational interpretation of the country’s musical past and future.

Maldeyeni

Walking on a Dream

Empire of the Sun
Is it in Portuguese? No. But it's so sunny outside, and I couldn't resist sharing this with you. That's the rationale for writing this short piece on Empire of the Sun's Walking on a Dream, a funky, jamming kind of tune for you to play on sunny days on your car stereo at full blast on a wide open road feeling the wind hit you in the face. Exhilarating. This electronic duo from Australia, comprised of Luke Steele and Nick Littlemore, sound something like MGMT and French band Phoenix's love child. I first heard it in the place I work and started craving it. Click the play button and jam. It's spring.

Walking on a Dream

Carregue no ‘play’ e curte o som.

Sara Tavares

Sara Tavares
Winner of two Portuguese TV music contests at the age of 16, Sara Tavares is a versatile singer, composer, and guitarist with a clear, vibrant, soulful voice that she uses to devastating effect. Of Cape Verdean descent, Sara started out singing gospel and fado but later succumbed to the delicious musical flavors of her ancestor's land. She regularly sells out concerts throughout Europe and Lusophone Africa, showcasing the clever wordplay and Cape Verdean rhythms present in songs like One Love, sung in Creole, Portuguese, English, and French. But it is the song Dam Bo that really got me hooked. It is a beautiful, heartfelt song that slowly, steadily builds, one instrument at a time. When her honeyed voice makes an appearance, it's slow and mournful, dripping with emotion. I hope it moves you as it moved me.

One Love
Dam Bo

Ayo

AyoI have been listening to her CD nonstop for about 3 days now and each time I listen to it I admire her more, I fall in love with a different song, I discover another witty lyric. Mostly I fall in love with her. This is Ayo, a German-born Nigerian songstress of Gypsy ancestry with a voice and accent unlike anything I have heard before. She's the first exception to the Portuguese hegemony of this blog, and a worthy one. Letter by Letter is a nice introduction to her reggae influenced, R&B style of music, while Life is Real has an afro-beat appeal to it. Both readily display her guitar skills.

Letter by Letter
Life is Real

Mundo Livre S/A

Mundo Livre S/AMundo Livre S/A is credited with creating a whole new genre in the ever changing musical landscape of Brazilian music - Manguebit. Created in the Pernambuco region, more specifically in Recife, manguebit (a.k.a. manguebeat) is a genre that fuses traditional brazilian sounds such as samba, ciranda, bossa nova, and maracatatu with psychedelic rock and funk, creating an intriguing sound that's great to jam to. Mundo Livre and other prominent Pernambucano musicians such as Fred 04 and Chico Science & Nacao Zumbi created this genre back in the early 90s, and it quickly evolved into a politico-cultural movement with its own manifesto, dubbed "Crabs with Brains". Maroca is a great example of their fusion music, while Meu Esquema, the most played song on my iPod, ever, showcases Mundo Livre's chillout side.

Maroca
Meu Esquema

Bidinte

Bidinte
You have most likely come across the grim story of Guinea-Bissau's recent coup d'etat. You have probably seen pictures of the blood splattered kitchen where Ex-President Nino Vieira was shot and attacked with machetes, days after he had ordered the death of his army chief. The next day, there wasn't even any kind of popular unrest, and incredulous Westerners reported that the locals didn't care much about what had happened and were not that surprised. That is the real tragedy of Guinea-Bissau, one of the poorest countries in the world and lagging behind every kind of conceivable development index. A bloody, violent double murder that ended with the death of the two most powerful people in the country failed to shock the tired population, the population of a country that displays to the world the worst of what Africa, and humans, are capable of doing.

This is the kind of atmosphere and reality that has spawned Bidinte, a gifted song writer, composer, percussionist, vocalist, and guitar player. He sings in Guinean Creole, a fusion of Portuguese and native African dialects. Bidinte is proof that even in the most hellish of places, art survives. Music exists. Poetry is created. Bidinte's songs are mournful and haunting, with clear Malian influences that when paired with his vocals and guitar, produce a very fresh sound. Considjo di Garandis is a great example. However, the juxtaposition of his words and the images in his video for the song Ke Cu Menino Na Tchora, available on iTunes, left me speechless...

Seu JorgeHe was Mané Galinha/Knockout Ned in the film City of God and Pelé dos Santos in The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou . He is Seu Jorge, a Brazilian singer, songwriter, and actor of incredible versatility and scope, renowned for his deep, soothing voice and superior music writing ability. In the aforementioned Life Aquatic, Seu Jorge performed covers of popular David Bowie’s songs entirely in Portuguese, including Starman featured here. In Cotidiano, Seu Jorge and Marcelinho da Lua remix a well known bossa nova track originally by bossa nova granddaddy Chico Buarque. But perhaps the standout track in this post is E Depois, a soul-bossa nova fusion composed by Brazilian producer BiD. It’s of Marvin Gaye quality in the sense that it is sublime baby making music.

Starman
E Depois
Cotidiano

The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou.

Cesaria Evora, the Queen of Morna

Cesaria Evora
When listening to morna one can instantly feel at peace, serene even. Morna is Cape Verde's unique contribution to the world's soundscape - it is a sound that flows effortlessly over an acoustic guitar, hand claps, and drums. There is no music better suited to fit the soul of Cape Verde, a land defined by the sea, by the soft ocean breeze, by the saudade they feel towards their departed sons. There are many more Cape Verdeans living outside of Cape Verde than in it, and the song Sodade beautifully invokes the feeling of longing the a Cape Verdean émigré feels toward his homeland. No one does morna better than the barefoot diva, the one who made it known outside of Cape Verde. In the song Angola, her motherly voice sings cheerfully over hand claps and several string instruments, and basically nothing else. Still, the song feels full even though the arrangements are minimal. Such is the power of Cesária Évora's voice, a voice that has inspired countless others to popularize Cape Verde's music.

Sodade
Angola

French Women Whispering in Your Ears

I am a huge fan of the French music scene, from the old chansons of icons such as Enzo Enzo to the newer chanteuses like Coralie Clement and Camille. If you are also a fan, look no further than Filles Sourires.

Juste Quelqu'un de Bien, by Enzo Enzo

Luanda a Noite
In honor of it being Friday night, here is a song called Minha Mwangole, a collaboration between DJ Furreta and Angolan rapper Dji Tafinha. Thinking about this song, and listening to it, brings up memories of bliss and happiness partying with my family and friends in the sands of the Miami Beach nightclub on the Ilha de Luanda having the time of my life. So does the jam Cebola Picada. The message here? Go to Luanda.

Minha Mwangole
Cebola Picada

Visite-a.
